    Internet service alternatives

802.16 at least where I am is really crummy service. Less reliable than cable and generally slower than DSL. It's a shared pipe too, like 802.11 or cable. You'll only get decent speed is there aren't many transceivers associated with your tower and if there aren't a lot of p2p fiends on your...

XP Hangs On Boot After Soft Reset

MUP.sys is a file related to Windows networking. It's one of the last drivers that loads before XP starts. I think the first thing to try is an XP repair install.

Er... Verizon FIOS is 30Mb/s service. Would you really worry about bandwidth?!? Also, Verizon is one of the "good guys" WRT to permissive TOS. Verizon let me run an SMTP and IMAP server on my DSL connection, and AFAIK it is the only major high-speed ISP that does not cooperate with RIAA or the...

Amd dual chips and XP home?

I don't find Fast User switching to be conducive to proper security. Especially since most XP machines don't have proper passwords to begin with. What's keeping your kids from monkeying with your stuff, again? I also don't like sitting at machine that's running a bunch of programs that I didn't...

Evidently, I will be buying a $100 sound card in 2005

I should've sprung for overnight shipping. :( Actually the fact that there's a daughterboard for Digital inputs is even more lust-inducing, now that I think about it. Drool. I haven't been this excited about a PCI card since I got my Orchid Righteous3D. Is it wrong to have impure thoughts...

Why do Socket 939 Boards suck so much?

I had trouble when I tried it before XP64 was officially released. It's probably better now. Anyway there is a very compelling reason to stick with 32-bit versions of windows: No 16-bit support. Ah! You say, "I don't use any 16-bit software!" Oddly enough, a lot of programs use 16-bit...

    Synching loads of e-mail...

You can buy Exchange addons to allow Exchange to pick up POP3 mail, or you could use a Linux PC with fetchmail to deliver them to Exchange. You SHOULD migrate them all to IMAP or something, which would handle the "seemless" part well enough, since it at least leaves behind the confusion and...

To borrow a word from Tannin: Shonk. MIPS is a term that gets thrown around a lot by Marketers who don't know what else to say about a processor. There might've been a time when it meant something useful, but everyone really interested in figuring out how powerful a CPU is looks at objective...

Why do Socket 939 Boards suck so much?

Newegg's prices, as a general rule, are so breathtakingly low that there's not much point in further discounting. That's the reason people show there. A lot of stuff I buy is cheaper from Newegg, including the shipping, than it is from a wholesaler. Granted, I don't buy in the quantities that...

Evidently, I will be buying a $100 sound card in 2005

About $50. Normally it's much cheaper to use a coaxial SPDIF connection instead. 50' of 75-ohm coax with an RCA jack on either end is usually 1/5 that price, even from the kinds of places that want to rape you for cables. The other part of that if you're so far away from your 5.1 surround...

Evidently, I will be buying a $100 sound card in 2005

There was a time, maybe a year ago, that A7N266s were available everywhere, cheap and plentiful. And then they all disappeared, almost overnight. Same thing has happened with other favorite boards of mine, like the GA-7VAXP and the GA-7S748N. Lesson learned: If I sell more than four or five of...

Why do Socket 939 Boards suck so much?

The funny thing is, 90% of the sound cards that are made either use a proprietary Creative chip, or have the same Crystal Media or Realtek chips as you get on motherboards. Philips used to have a decent chip, and now Via has the only generic premium chip.

Via KM stuff is great for business machines! No doubt about it. Well, OK, as implemented by Gigabyte it's great. No comment on anyone else's. Pair it with a Sempron and go to town. But back to the Asstasticness of Socket 939 offerings... I'm looking at 939 as a "performance" system right...

Why do Socket 939 Boards suck so much?

What I want is simple: More than 4 SATA ports 1394 support Gigabit LAN Passively cooled Northbridge SPDIF output (fringe feature, but lots of boards have it) Sound from a chip better than Realtek's - I am NOT paying $100 for a sound card in 2005. Having looked at a co-worker's top-of-the-line Asus 640x200something PocketPC, I think the #1 thing that would keep me from using a palmtop is the terribly small screen. On the other hand, I've heard rumors that Toshiba is planning a laptop with a 19" display, which sounds exactly like...
