    WinTV PVR 250 Experiences

Personally, I think other vidcap hardware has better output. And the software that comes with the card - unless you're using Snapstream - isn't just bad, it's downright brutal. Also they're incompatible with 99% of other vidcap software, and also with a surprising array of other programs that...

Memorex Announces 16X / Dual Layer DVD Drives

As I understand things, the spin rate of a 16x DVD is comparable to a 52x CD-ROM drive. Both approach the physical limitations of the media at the moment.

Best, most efficent DVD ripper software, and reader?

In my experience, DVD ripping speeds are usually limited by the drive's firmware, moreso than any technique a software decrypter uses. My fastest "ripping" drive is a 3-year-old LiteOn, that actually rips at around ~12X. Newer drives seem to hit a wall at 2 or 4x, which has just GOT to be an...

    Power Measure/Rating? Cost?

The best thing you can do, WRT to power consumption, is to shut your (CRT) monitor off when you aren't using it. They use tons of power and generate HUGE amounts of waste heat, especially the big 19"+ ones. Yeah, I leave eight or nine computers on all the time in my house, but I almost never...

16:9 vs. 4:3 Format for New HDTV

I keep buying widescreen TVs, because most of my viewing is movies or TV shows that were produced in letterbox. Which should someday be the standard for all new TV content as well. But for now watching 4:3 content is mildly unsatisfying and even a little annoying. I can stretch the picture...

    NAV

I think it's better than wasting time with an AV product that's actually installed on a PC. If a machine is so borked it can't connect to the internet to run Housecall it probably needs to be gold disk'd anyway.

Better see what it is.) I also wonder if virus writers know how to...

    Computer Environment

I keep a PC running in my garage, but it's out there on my workbench, waiting for me to test spare parts. Its case even has some rust on it, where paint got chipped off. But I think putting a whole rack of known-god equipment out there might not be wise.

    Should Rumsfeld keep his job?

Anyone seen Fahrenheit 9/11 yet? The theater I saw it in - an 11:30AM showing, mind you, was half full. Not only did we the audience applaud at the end, applaud someone for saying things desperately needed to be said, we applauded in middle of the movie. We cried and laughed at the same time...

If the plastic slip covers get too hot they can actually melt the printing on the front off or warp the CD. So don't leave a binder or soft carry-case on your car's dash. Jewel cases aren't that durable, but the cases DVDs typically come in are damned near impossible to damage and don't...

Spider Man 2 was literally perfect as a comic book movie. OK, the score was weak. But other than that? Flawless. Why do wireless to wired bridges cost so much?

I've got three or four of 'em sitting around. If only they had a CF slot or something. They'd be fantastic little mail/web servers. It still annoys me that one of the most complex devices Linksys makes costs so little when compared to vastly simpler hardware.

Why do wireless to wired bridges cost so much?

    I can buy a WRT54G for maybe $75. That's a wired switch + NAT device plus infrastructure-mode AP that runs at 54Mbit. I can buy a WET11 for around $90. That's a single-port ethernet to infrastructure-mode AP that runs at 11Mbit. I can buy a WGA54G for around $130. That's a single-port ethenet...

[NEWS] - Nvidia goes for Nforce 4

I've heard staticky sound, but never on my personal machine nforce system. Getting Hard Drives out of Computers...

The Window-based guys generally run Windows CE and have ~300MHz CPUs with 64 - 512MB RAM. If you can compile your program for that, they can do things besides be a terminal. Besides, why do anything on a client if you've got a monster server 50 feet away that's using .04% of its CPU(s)?
