    Most evil software company

Please to explain, Mr. honold. As a software company, Sun's only offense is not giving java over to a standards organization. Well, that and admirably winning lawsuits against winning-vote-getter Microsoft. :)

Sigh. I suppose I'll have to install Delphi or something so I can play with things.

    Most evil software company

1993 (the first year I had a real internet connection, and also the year AOL came and screwed everything up) had gopher and USENET as primary means of internet communication. Netnews was particularly great back then, since most service providers had TOS that included prohibitions against ALL...

FYI: Popup blocker for IE on Windows

Found this while playing around some freeware sites. No idea how well it works, but since it seems to include options for killing flash and ani-GIFs, I figure it's probably something of an improvement for you misguided IE-using types. http://www.kolumbus.fi/eero.muhonen/FS/

Toying with the idea of a Divx performance DB

Don't know yet. That's why I'm still toying with the idea. :) I'm surprised there isn't a shareware app somewhere that'll tell you how long a certain program takes to run.

    Most evil software company

Subject says it all. Reason for the poll? The people I work for are convinced that I just hate software. But seriously, if these are the things you had to work with every day, wouldn't you be a little bitter? AOL gives us AOL, a bunch of different IM clients, Netscape/Mozilla and Winamp, and is...

Toying with the idea of a Divx performance DB

Subject says it all. I'm trying to figure out what I'd need to create a database for divx encoding performance. Why? It seems to be the most stressful thing I can do on a PC, outside of gaming. I figure I'll need a "standard" video clip. Something that wouldn't take long to download or...

Space Shuttle Columbia Lost During Reentry

... only slightly more morbid, the investigation into the Challenger disaster revealed that several of the astronauts in that case SURVIVED and were still conscious up to the point where their cockpit hit the atlantic ocean. Like the 9/11 passengers, I have to think that those who know their...

    Future plans for the Duron

Yep. We have that situation now, in fact. There are IA64 versions of Windows 2000 and Linux, and software must be specially compiled for that chip, exactly like software for an entirely different architecture (e.g. Alpha, PPC, UltraSparc). x86-64 will run current software, but current chips...

Space Shuttle Columbia Lost During Reentry

I learned about 9/11 from slashdot, and this from this thread, here. Slashdot had 600 posts about it, 20 minutes after they posted their headline about it. I turned on Telemundo, the channel I get with clearest reception, and of course I saw the video, over and over and over. It didn't matter...

    what's your favorite email client?

Using outlook isn't stupid. Misguided, maybe. :) I don't think there's much justification to Outlook, unless you're someone who needs the Calendar aspect of the program. Other software can handle everything else, doesn't have the virus vulnerabilities, and won't use Word as an email editor...

    Future plans for the Duron

One of the local distributors here had a XP1400 - 1600 CPUs priced LESS than the Duron 1.3 for about two weeks, until they were sold out. Make no mistake, the Duron is still a good choice for easy upgrades. That's what I've been buying those AK32s for: a $50 board, $30 chip and $5 fan makes for...

    Activations problems multi-booting WinXP?

Actually Blake, some time ago P5_133XL got a different answer on that question from Microsoft's Licensing people: You need to have one license of windows for every installation, whether it's on the same PC or different ones. Anecdotally, I know that you can activate many times on the same...

They've been running in and out of stock for about a week, but NewEgg is listing refurbished GA-7VAXPs for $49. I've bought a few refurbished boards from them in the past (an MSI K7T266 ARU and several Shuttle AK32x's). They've been just fine for me so far. Worst thing I can say is that the...

Which Net browser do you use?

Eh. lynx was the first web client I used. Until I saw mosaic, I really did like gopher better, since its numbered links imposed more organization to the information being presented. Anyway, since my early internet access was all shell-based, it's the client I came to love. By the same token, I...

Disclaimer: I've never activated WinXP myself. I don't think you'd have a problem in either case of installing XP on the same PC. Since no one is going to stand up for it, I'd also like to say that having lynx & wget are both incredibly handy utilities. I use wget to snag web pages via scripts fairly regularly (you figure out what I use *that* for), and lynx is excellent for annoyingly image-laden pages (e.g. most...

I use Moz very nearly exclusively. IE only for browsing on Microsoft's site while at work. When I had *nix boxes with KDE, I did a lot with Konq, because it was handy, but not that I'm purely WindowMaker, it's all Moz there are well.

Very rarely. Mostly they just don't happen. There are "Page cannot be displayed" messages where there would be banners and ads in IE, but once someone explains why, everyone thinks that's just fine. Moz user that I am, I really hadn't realized how bad the the web has gotten under IE.

That guy will probably take 32MB EDO or FP SIMMs. 64s are actually iffy on many HX boards (the Tyan and Micronics HX boards I remember both had weird requirements for high-capacity RAM). I don't think I'd bother trying 128s, no matter what the book says.
