    New sig for The Giver

Let's not talk about ego-crushing right now, OK? Someone mentioned a portion of the Beautitudes (Blessed are the meek...) above. Personally the sentiment from that particular work (and I say this as an unbeliever) I find most beautifully expressed is "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall...

Storage Forum 101: how to make sense of this madhouse

Let's do this right, a bit. The history of this site can be found elsewhere but it boils down to the simple notion that a dozen or so of soon-to-be SR expatriots needed a better way to talk than CCing emails. Handruin started Storageforum. The rest of us followed. At the moment, Tannin is in...

    Macintosh Performa 637 CD

You'll have to get a licensed copy of Mac OS for your Performa. I imagine they probably go pretty cheaply on Ebay. Probably OS 8.6 is a good choce. Seems to me that's about the right vintage for that hardware and I know 8.6 is considered the best of its version number. OS9 is probably too new to...

    WHere are Merc. and Flagreen?

If you don't understand, Prof, what I mean is that there is a ritual to dealing with people in a business or professional setting. Things are polite and there is a ritual standard of behavior. Most other social interactions don't have that and I find I'm overwhelmed.

Groltz, were you the anti-Trinton? I do not have an alias (except this one). I never have. I don't much care for my real first name and I've always gone by nicknames anyway. At any rate, there is a justification for this thread. A lot of what is shared by the folks here is history is...

Amy and I have an odd relationship. The Giver revealed...

My belief was that three would be sufficient as well. The counter argument to that was that, with five mods there would be "more coverage"; the "Many Hands Make Short Work" philosophy. I think 'round the clock coverage is a rough goal. In any case our next moderator should probably be someone...

Thanks for advice, all. I'm really sorry to bring this here but under the circumstances I've been asked to keep this to myself in "real life" and some things, one just can't keep a lid on forever. In case there's any confusion, my self-destructive urges are more along the lines of "picking...

My hope was that the Giver was a distinct entity, Bill. That is something I had been convinced of up to the point I actually looked. If you have permissions sufficient to change a filename, you can delete that file. The two "classical" solutions to "undeletable files" on Unix systems are to either delete through the use of well-chose wildcards, or to reference the full path to the file starting from the root directory. Both...

You can use the same cables for 10 and 100mbit. Most NICs will auto-sense which to use. Depending on the network equipment, you may be force to 10Mbit if you attach a 10Mbit device. Since your sharing a modem connection, it isn't like you need a 100Mbit connection for that, anyway.
