    Digital camera

Spent some money today. On StereoDude's advice I picked up a Canon Powershot G2. $600. And a new (well, lease-return) 21" Sony display. The display is mine and mine alone. I'm splitting the cost of the camera with my girlfriend's parents; they wanted to buy a crappy little HP digicam and I...

Richter? Reger? I can't think of any other German composers who died in that era. Don't you keep program notes? And yes, that story is true. Hayden's life, since he worked in the royal courts of Europe his whole life, is well-documented. Now you're going to drive me nuts until I figure out who...

    The Sinister Microsoft

That's not terribly different from Oligarchy, in which powerful business leaders (in the US, powerful businesses, since our laws treat corporations as people) control the functions of government. The problem with that system is, those who fall outside the sphere of interest to the oligarchs...

    VCR Substitutes

The quality of recorded video on nvidia cards, and I say this after an objective evaluation of it, doesn't look as good as what comes off an ATI. It's certainly comparable with most of the Brooktree-based cards I've seen, but I think ATI and Matrox have the better solutions for inexpensive...

    The Sinister Microsoft

While I won't argue that there are some elements of facism in the US government, I'd like to put forth that the better term to describe our modern government is "Oligarchy". Although it was decidedly less so under our previous chief executive. My gay, herbalist, druid friend has also suggested...

I tend toward the other extreme of the day, Wagner. Tchaikovsky once said that Wagner "has great moment but bad quarters of an hour". Still, those moments... I bought a complete "Ring" cycle on DVD last weekend (Deutsche Grammaphon, of course). I'm still working through it. But, oh, what...

K6-2 450 MHZ AMD: Compatibility problems???

I've worked with them throughout time. The biggest beef I've had with Cyrix chips is unquestionably heat. Cyrix chips are the reason I started carrying around spare HSF combos. When the first 6x86s were released, NOTHING could properly cool them. You'd throw them in a case and eventually they'd...

K6-2 450 MHZ AMD: Compatibility problems???

The MII-366s I saw were mostly on the various PC Chips boards at 100MHz. Given how limited support was for 83MHz bus was, even on the generic boards that were practically made for the dreadful things, I'd hazard to say that was probably the more common part. Even if it wasn't, knowing the...

I just looked at your CPU pages Tannin. I hadn't actually read all the way through before. Acer made a low-profile, legacy-free machine around the C6 that was roughly the...

    Tom's graphic cards comparison

I would've liked a V5 for comparison's sake. They threw in the TNT2. I'm more than impressed with the showing my $60something Radeon 7500s made, though. It's bumping up against the fastest GF2s and not more than a couple percent slower than the low-end GF3 for most things.

IFSMGR.VXD fails, but only when on the net

IFSMGR is associated with some of the low-level IDE disk driver functions. You might be able to fix that problem most easily by copying a more recent version of the file (it lives in c:\windows\system\vmm32, and probably wasn't replaced during a Windows reinstall) from a Win98 system. The...
