I suspect that T Bone at 60 is just a grumpy old man that remembers what it used to sound like. How many musicians that old have hearing worth a damn?

Like any regular part that ends up in a Govt project.
It appears to be a standard 340MB drive. Old technology with a known performance history.

B&D wasn't all junk but since they've owned DeWalt since 1960 the better stuff seems to be marketed in that range now. The thing that I miss with my good drills compared with new models is the slow start...
The NZ price is around $70, Aus is about $65 with discount for subsequent years. Even allowing for local taxes and exchange rates there's a gap. Maybe the local resellers are paying the US$39 equivalent.

ATX12V 2.2 has both 24 pin and 12V connector.
If you have a MB that uses the 12V to feed the CPU regulator and the main power connector for the rest of the 12V load, the 20 pin version only has 1x12V pin good for 6-8Amps??? The 24 pin connector adds 1 each of 12,3.3,5 and common.
The free version of 7 is already out.

The worst delay on non-slrs is getting focus. With the A80 there would be no guilt from money sitting in the cupboard and you could use the same user custom preset method described for G3 here http://www.marcjutras.com/ehyperfocal.html
The plugs have a limit of about 6 Amps per pin. Pins that are slightly loose or drawing more Amps can result in melt down of the plugs. Some boards use the 12V plug to get the power CPU closer to the regulator.
