NEWZ: Western Digi Releases 400 GB "Reliable" HD

This announcement is interesting, I think, in another respect: is this new drive a three platter drive (just like the previous one at 320GB, which probably had three platters of 107GB), which would mean that WD has achieved the 133GB/platter density, or is it rather a more mundane four platters...

    Backup solution -- dumb idea?

Interesting discussion... I would use an external drive, as it is relatively portable and meant to survive some ESD. Bits don't get erased by Brownian movement before at least 5 years, but there is a small risk. As in all back-up methods one important aspect is to verify regularly that the data...

    LCD projectors: buying advice

I would also pay close attention to the noise level generated by the fan. This projector will probably be used in a living room, not in an office, and the users will be much more sensitive to noise than the average geek (no offense meant, your photos tell it all) in front of a souped up PC with...

Recommendations for an external SATA enclosure?

Pradeep, you may want to check the durability of the connector you're using. I understand that most SATA connectors are designed for "inside the box" use, hence for very few connects and disconnects. An external box will be subjected to many more connects/disconnects and the connectors will...

    Bigger Drives When?

One starts finding 7200.8 drives 300 and 400 GB, see for instance "Computerbroker" in Switzerland. Prices are still steep, with a smallish 8MB cache: the price is 50% higher per GB than the latest Maxtor drive, which boasts a 16 MB cache, but is limited to 300 GB. An interesting question would...

[NEWS] - WDC Back in the 2.5" Game

WD announces 40GB/p, when both HGST and Seagate announce for the same time a 50GB/p. I guess pricing is going to drop big time. Yéti

    Formatting question #2

foramtting #2 I understand that Partion Magic will do the FAT-32 job up to 250GB. Windows stops at 32 GB. After that things get harder...

    7200.7 results coming in.

These results actually look very disappointing... could they be due to a 2MB cache size? Otherwise the 'Cuda V SATA -with an 8MB cache- results are much better everywhere but in STR. Also interestingly enough the noise level went up! Was Seagate so eager to issue this drive now that it did not...

WD Raptor on it's way into my PC soon, any tests beforehand?

Raptor performance I recently had the opportunity to test a couple Raptors. Surprisingly their maximum Sequential Throughputs were lower than what StorageReview found (58 MB max instead of 63). I'd be interested to learn if this is a common occurence or just a case of bad luck.

    Hitachi 2.5-inch 60 GB 7.2kRPM & 80 GB 5.4kRPM Hard Driv

First laptop 7200 drive Wouldn't the title go to Toshiba's MK5024GAY? 50 GB 2 platters. It seems to have been issued this March and is now just available on some European web sites.

    New Samsung drive

Tannin should leap with joy, Samsung at last came up with their 80GB/p drive, even if it's only two platters: http://www.samsung.ca:3304/cgi-bin/nasecabc/en/b2c/product/product_detail.jsp?LoginFlag=NO&prod_id=SP1604N#[/url]

    [NEWS] - Barracuda 7200.7 review

Actually a more recent review and to my opinion relevant is available at http://ixbt.com/storage/seagate-barr7.shtml while the one platter drives (2MB cache only though) are now available at several on-line stores here in the US (Techdepot through CDW).

SR has released the first Maxtor Atlas 15K results

and it looks as if Maxtor is reasonably serious at giving Seagate a run for its money! For a first go, Maxtor may have done a good job, if reliability is better than it was with the initial 10K3.

DM+9 review finally up at SR

ATA drives typically have a much lower command overhead than SCSI drives (they don't queue and reorder read commands). Thus for relatively simple benchmarks, with mostly short seeks, ATA drives stand a good running chance when compared to SCSI ones. All random IOmeter scores will show that the...

5,400 RPM Laptop Hard Drive with 16MB Cache

Toshiba 2.5" with 16MB cache As far as I can tell , this is a pretty old drive (issued in 5/02). Toshiba came out with a 60GB version last Fall. Both have a 16 MB cache, and neither seem very good at caching. They behave about as well as a similar drive with an 8MB cache.

Can anybody explain this transfer rate to me?

funny STR graph Looking at the referenced graph from the 400BB (from the SR site, I still haven't figured how to include a graph in my posts), it seems that at least the first part is identical to that in this thread. http://www.storagereview.com/articles/200009/20000921WD400BB_STR.html This...

    Barracuda ATA V announced

Mercutio, if we are talking about seek times, then -for once- Seagate is only just a little off the mark: 9.3 ms vs. 9.1 ms, according to Eugene's WinBench measures. Who gets a case (or however it's called in Strine) of what?

    How to start programming

what programming language to start wit / use I would agree with Will "design your algorithm and implement it". Knuth's "Art of Computer programming" is considered as the reference for design of algorithms -at least volume 1. Yet you are in practice extremely restrained by the implementation...

    Samsung Products

I am surprised that Tea or one of his alter egos has not yet spotted that Samsung announced delivery of the first 60GB/p to hit the market: http://www.samsungelectronics.com/hdd/ Actually they seem to have announced it last March at Cebit (albeit very discreetly) and are now delivering

Western Digital quietly releasing new 5400rpm ATA drive?

WD1200AB Cougtech, the WD site indicates that this is a three platter drive, so presumably still a 40 GB/p... we'll still have to wait a little for the 60 GB/p ones.
