Adaptec 5405 and western digital WD1600YS

Hi, i am from spain and new in this forum. I was looking an storage specialized forum and i think that this one is specialized in that. I am using an adaptec 5405 with a raid5 of WD1600YS. But the problem is that i get a low performance when the so installs software, but when i test with hdtach i get a normal speed, 200-170mb sec reading. When i install something, the activity leds gets on and of in intervals of 0,5 secs, and the system seems to freeze. Did someone use a controller like this before and had problems?? I used an adaptec 3405 with four samsung 501lj and i had no problems. Thanks for your help.

It looks like you need to test your write speed to the array. RAID-5 is very fast at reads, but much slower at writes. Depending on the controller configuration, it could make the problem worse.

I ran into a problem a couple of years ago where adaptec had problems with Western Digital hard drives. You might want to look through adaptecs FAQs.

It's difficult that someone had the same disks, and what i am going to do is sell or use them in other computers, if no one knows what is happening. And i will call adaptec to see what they say to me. Thanks to every one.

I have always had excellant results with 3Ware RAID controllers.
