A client is moving to Adelaide for a year, and is in search for a internet connection there.

He'd probably manage(like) with an upload speed of 128Kb/s+, due to the need to move lots of files and pictures of projects he's involved in. DL speed would be 256/512Kb/s+.

What should I recommend to him? What companies? Any links to them and their price lists?

Thanks!

JoJo,

Just confirming you mean Adelaide in Australia? If so check out these companies:

TPG = Fairly cheap, fairly average customer support - OK if you know how to fix your own problems.
http://www.tpg.com.au/products_services/adsl_pricing.php?type=residential

NetSpace = As TPG
http://home.netspace.net.au/broadband/

Chariot Internet = Expensive but good customer support.

Another company worth looking at is Optus, their plans are OK if you also get your phone connection with them. I don't know what their customer support is like.

Do not use Telstra (the National Telco) as they are very expensive and have really terrible customer support.

Cheers,

I agree with most of what Mangy Dog says, but I'd have to suggest you avoid TPG like the plague. Misleading plans, pitiful support, wrong-headed DSL infrastructure and invisible proxies (although this last most probably won't affect your client).

In some ways, they're worse than Telstra BigPong (not the support; there is no ISP in Oz with worse support than PigPond - maybe on the planet. I could go on in depth, but another time ...)

Expect to pay at least AU$60 per month for a DSL connection - any less and I guarantee there is a catch. That will normally only buy you a miserable 256/64 connection, but you can get a 512/128 if you shop carefully - watch out for 1GB or less monthly quotas.

Last time I enquired, DSL connection times ranged upwards from two weeks. As Telstra owns all the exchanges, this can't easily be reduced. If you're unlucky enough to score a pair-gain line or some other horror, it will take considerably longer. If he knows where he is going to live, I would start organizing things before he leaves the States.

BTW, a fair proportion of lines in Oz will never be suitable for ADSL. You are looking at satellite or ISDN (which is now limited to 128kbps). Or Cable.

If you're lucky enough to have Cable in the street, either Telstra or Optus (most streets are the former, some the latter), you can now get a 5Mbs/128kbs connection for AU$60 per month. Obviously, the 5Mbs is the absolute upper limit and not at all typical. :(

BTW, that last plan has a quota of 10GB. Telstra includes both uploads and downloads (which is a scam), but many ISPs only charge for downloads. Naturally, if you throw enough money at an ISP, you can get higher performance.

If you get more detailed info closer to his move, such as a suburb, street or ideally phone number, it becomes possible to check availability of different broadband options. PM me if you want assistance - I'd be happy to help.

I pretty much manage to download 800MB to 1GB a night. How the heck do you live on 1GB a month?

Even a 48k modem connection gives you something like 1.5GB/month if you managed to download continuously.

How do you stand for that BS?

Well, I don't. :)

How about this entry level plan from TPG:

$129 setup + $19.95 pm, dynamic IP, 256/64kbs, 200MB quota with 15c/MB excess capped at $40. Can't be routed, BTW.

If you look at it carefully, you will realize this is another way of describing a $60 pm plan - you only need 467MB to get there. :(

But then there's BigPong's equivalent:

$189 setup + $29.95 pm, dynamic IP, 256/64kbs, 200MB quota with 15c/MB excess.

Notice there's no capping. It would cost Merc about $4000 pm.

Instead of excess charges, many plans cap speeds to dialup levels once a certain quota is reached. Some ISPs, like Telstra and Optus, openly admit this will happen on their "Unlimited" plans at 10GB and 12GB respectively. Others, like TPG, are known to have quotas, but won't reveal them.

Gack!

Remind me to not consider Tannin's offer of employment again until Australia gets back in the Bandwidth Fairy's good graces.

And while I'm at it, are there similar limits placed on those bandwidth-abusers who choose to purchase leased lines?

JoJo,

this link has all the broadband options for each city listed so you can do a comparison based on cost/speed/download usage/contract length etc.

http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/

It is updated regularly. Don't forget to check on "Setup" fees, this can change the cost of a twelve month contract by up to AUS$15 per month - a hidden gotcha that I detest

FWIW, I did this for Canberra for myself 3 months ago and went with OzEmail because they did not have any connection/setup fee if I signed for twelve months--which made them the cheapest on a per month basis--and they had the largest download limit (12GB). I had previously been with Telstra for nearly 3 years with less than satisfactory performance on too many occasions. Not recommended.
