I am officially looking for work in China beginning Jan '04. If anyone has any leads or leads to leads I'd appreciate the contacts. I'm most interested in the area of Kunming but beggars can't be choosers.

I haven't been around much lately and I may be around even less in the runup to Jan. Who knows if I'll even have access to SF from over there.

Thanks in advance to all you guys. My friends.

PS. I still have some stuff for sale in the marketplace. Make me an offer.

Wow, I hope things work out for you Howell. That sure sounds like a big change in your life.

That makes 4 users that we're losing. :(

What are you talking about Buck? I can only count two, Howell and Timmy.

Ah, you're not very observant for an alcohol seller. Tony and Tea don't come around very much either, they're essentially gone too.

Nothing in the way of contacts to offer but best of luck to you. I'll mention your need for contacts next time I talk to some of my neighbors. Since about half of them are Chinese around here in Flushing, I might get lucky.

Any particular reasons for doing this? Or just a change in scenery?

I'm half serious that if things go downhill in NYC the PRC might be my new home. The only drawbacks I see for you now are that you don't speak Chinese, and the PRC blocks quite a few websites. I think you'll find most of the people there are very curious about Americans, even if the government encourages them to avoid contact. I wish I had the time and/or will to join you. It should certainly be interesting.

You should probably summarize the remaining items for sale in a new post in the for sale or trade forum. You may be tracking the original threads but potential buyers probably aren't.

When you get over there, try not to look down on your fellow man.

Maybe you can check out some nice cleavage from above while you're over there (might be a rare find).

Best wishes, Howell. It'll be a major change, what with the language, culture, etc. It'll be a great learning as well as humbling experience. More people should do this - go live in a foreign country for a while. Does wonders for perspective.

Grandpa out.

Employment leads or housing? If employment, what kind of position & experience?

Sounds like a radical life change. Care to share what's driving the decision? It seems several of us are curious.

I would especially appreciate job leads. I figure I can find housing if I can find employment. It's also necessary for the work visa.

Generally I do system administration and desktop support. I'd like to get into training, work more with people. I can send a cover letter and resume if desired. Alternatively, I would also enjoy work in the outdoor recreation industry.

As for why, why not. I'm not married, not dating and no children. My parents and the rest of my family are in good health. I enjoy living simply and this requires few funds. I like meeting and talking to people and China has 1/4 of the world's people. I like to travel. If and when I return I'll move right back to Chattanooga. I love it here. I'm particularly interested in SW China and the city of Kunming. The geography would be familiar and the weather a little more moderate. But, I'd be willing to go to Hong Kong or Taiwan for a year or so as a stepping stone.

Although I'm sure I'll learn some new things I'm not thinking It'll be that big a deal. Time will tell. I'll still be the same person just living in a different place and speaking a different language and interacting with different people. I started studying "Standard Chinese" about a month ago and I'm progressing more quickly than I thought I would. I'll do my best to maintain y stateside relationships through email and hopefully my website.

I've lived overseas before but this will be the first time that I'm responsible for logistics and long range planning for myself. These are also my biggest weaknesses. Though, I'm comfortable living by the seat of my pants and making split second decisions and then "making do".

Thanks for the interest guys and any ideas.

Good luck Howell! You're making a big change, and you're going to experience a piece of life that others may never have the opportunity to explore.

I wish you the best in your adventures, and I hope you keep us posted on your change of life style. If you won't be able to post or send e-mail I can give you my address to write an actual letter. ;)

Best of luck Howell. Every time I'm between girls and jobs at the same time I'm tempted to go somewhere else. Doesn't look like that will be happening any time soon for me, though.

Whooah there! Rumours of our absence are, in Mark Twain's immortal phrase, greatly exagerated.

We just got back from another trip. Been away for 8 or 9 days. The plan was to slip up to the NSW coast to look for Regent Honeyeaters and be back on Monday. Wound up in Burke and got back in the early hours of Sunday morning ... a mere 144 hours late.

We did the Bourke to Ballarat leg in one hit — over 1000 kilometres in a day — and we are bushed. Sure is differet here. For one thing, it's cold..

We will come back here and play tommorow.

If we ever wake up.

Good luck Howell! Hope it all works out for you. My brother did a 3 year ex-patriot stint in Penang while working in Perai. He had a great time and all of us (my folks and other brothers) headed there for his wedding about a year before the end of his working there. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time. I hope to get to Taiwan sometime in the next few years on business. Perhaps I'll run into you.

Wow, I get homesick just contemplating such a move Howell. Anyways, I do hope, when the time comes, that you will be able to keep in touch with us here...but in the meantime, get back to work :D
