Just wondered if anyone saw the Northern lights last night? Was pretty cool.

In Alaska during the winter it is not uncommon for the sky to be lit up like a neon store light display on some nights. The most common colour is a bright dayglo lime green, interspersed with streaks of magenta through to a deep purple. The waves often weave together like a waltz of celestial glowsticks, ebbing and following in a panoramic aerial dance. Needless to say one has to be careful not to become mesmerized while driving -- beats a laser light show by many a mile.

Brilliant show here around 3am, certainly the best I've seen from here.

Put some pics up here from our deck. I've never had the opportunity to photograph the aurora before, but maybe there'll be a repeat tonight. It's tough to figure out exposure to balance between a dark sky and a bright wash of colour with no detail. 45 seconds seemed to work best.

Of course they don't begin to do justice to the show. It's the movement and the shimmering that is most striking. There's something awesome and majestic about these; I'd love to go up north to see a bigger spectacle.
