They do what anybody else would do, and they're from Automobile magazine. The system is a waste as it's obviously much faster to park the old fashioned way.

Besides the fact that the system is slow as hell and confusing to use, the thing I found interesting is that it requires the driver to brake and gas. The commercials make it look like the system is automatic but it isn't. I hope Toyota can keep putting out crap like that. :)

New technologies that they put in cars seldom work 100%, but I'm sure they'll get it right any year now. But it feels a little bit like they've found a solution to a problem that doesn't exist in the first place.

If you cannot park a car manually...you shouldn't be driving. :) I like funny gizmos like that just for the sake of saying it can be done, but that isn't practical at all. It would have been nice to see the parrallel parking feature in the same context just for argument sake. Two thumbs down for toyota on that feature.

I never parallel park, so that system seems like a (theoretically) nice feature, albeit one that needs some bugs worked out. Of course it will never substitute for human judgement. I wonder if the autoparking system were available on some POS Chevy, would Kevin be allowed to complain?

Oh come on Lunar. Kevin is a good guy just showing [sarcasm]his love for the Japanese cars[/sarcasm]...it is his primary competition of course. :) I'm without a doubt a Japanese auto fan, but this feature is what it is...crap.

Parallel parking isn't that bad...give it a try some time. I remember it being part of my driving test...so it should be required to drive. ;)

It depends on the state. I do not recall a driving test requirement for parallel parking, but it was soooo long ago.

Yeah, Kevin is a nice guy. Sorry for the overreaction, but always seems to be so pro-GM and my experiences with them have been negative.

Actually, those guys look like Larry, Curly and Moe. Bunch of jerks.

The system probably works a lot better if someone with IQ above a tomato was using it.

And, if you watch real close, the parking system aborts when someone touches the brake or gas.

Bozo :joker:

( I wonder which one of the Big 3 they work for??? ;-) )

Automobile magazine, a usually pro-import rag.

Anyway, if GM did it, I would say it was dumb too. At least if it functioned as badly as it would appear in the video. Really, anybody who can't part their own vehicle (parallel or not) should not be driving. :)

Perhaps anyone who can't parallel park should not be parallel parking, rather than not driving. I have not had occasion to parallel park in more than 10 years. I suppose such parking is necessary in the crowded cities. In many areas around here street parking is not allowed and there are usually plenty of parking spaces in parking lots.

Around here, at least, parallel parking may be a necessity for any driver. Parking is scarce, public parking lots even scarcer; I parallel park on average 2-3 times a day. Therefore, some competence should* be demonstrated before one should be allowed to drive here. The likelyhood of the situation occuring without the option of avoiding it is too high.

I like Automobile magazine. But the bunch of fraternity boys they used for that demonstration was stupid. I'd like to see someone intelligent from their staff like Jean Jennings or Robert Cumberford attempt the process. Then I could form a better opinion. Right now I'm left with the television commercial or a bunch of baboons vandalizing a perfectly good car -- not the best sources for an informed opinion.

Well, maybe the system only meant for parallel parking? It looks like it from the all the movies I've seen on internet.

Indeed it is ;)... most especially if you emulate this very PIC Audi commercial I just saw today (LMAO "the luxury car for people that can park themselves")...it's...it's....just, soooo wrong :p.

And referencing PIC, Merc should get a kick out of this one if he hasn't seen it already...now there's some high-tech suspension for yah. (is there already a thread on favorite car commercials?).

I believe I also saw a Nissan Altima ad mentioning both their new hybrid model and yet another auto-park function.
