But it is back-ordered. Still, it let us see where AMD plans to place it price wise against other current CPUs :

Athlon XP Thunderbird retail :
2400+ => 323$CDN
2600+ => 498$CDN
2700+ => 577$CDN

Athlon XP Barton retail :
2500+ => 314$CDN
2800+ => 657$CDN
3000+ => 1023$CDN :eekers:

Pentium 4 Northwood retail :
2.4GHz => 324$CDN
2.53GHz => 399$CDN
2.66GHz => 474$CDN
2.8GHz => 642$CDN
3.06GHz => 1069$CDN

The price of the 2800+ and especially the one of the 3000+ are kind of ugly, aren't they. AMD should sell them something like 15% beloew Intel if they want to increase their market share noticeably.

I have built some nice little boxes for ~650$ and 1000$ recently, so no way I'm gonna spend that much just for the processor.

I'll remember that comment the next time you say an IBM laptop is too expensive. Or a laptop at all. :p

Just like with Intel, AMD can now afford to charge a premium for their fastest product. Only the hard core and those that must have the fastest x86 FPU available will buy the 3000+. Joe 6 pak will keep on buying the ~500 dollar complete machines.

And also, it helps keep demand for the part low while the early yields are low, so that they get a chance to ramp up production before they cut the price and everybody wants to buy one. It's bad PR, not being able to meet your orders. Intel do the same. They are not stupid.

Uh, Coug . . . . shouldn't the first heading be Thoroughbred not Thunderbird? :eek: Unless Canadians have special access to really fast Thunderbird cores that produce enough heat to warm a small family. :)

Funny how the T'bred 2400+ is more than the Barton 2500+...

I was considering the Barton 2500+ once I read that someone has a stable motherboard to support it.

Will the 8RDA+ run the Barton now, or will it need a bios upgrade?

It just needs the current bios revision flashed in. The last two (maybe three) 8RDA+ bioses released by Epox have had Barton support.

Especially considering I don't have a motherboard that supports Bartons.

Bello?
