Usually, it should be CNN Sports' job to describe these kind of events, shouldn't it? Or at least to describe them that way...

I hope this rover and the next one have a bit of luck. With the success rate of these Mars missions lately am I the only one who thinks maybe something up there doesn't want to be found?

Damn Martians! I specifically told them to reload the cosmic death ray after the Beagle incident. Bah, good help is hard to come by in this galaxy.

Maybe this is an English-Metric problem?

Anyway, Mars Express should be in position to acquire a signal from Beagle 2 on Wednesday (January 7).

I'm sure it's lost. Either it crashes badly or the balloons supposed to absorb the landing impact didn't deployed once the module stoped moving and block the "beagle" from transmitting.

I agree. Those colour stereo pictures from Spirit pretty much kick anything that B2 could have sent anyway.

Beagle was the ship that Charles Darwin sailed upon during his tour of the natural world many years ago.

Beagle 2 is the missing (can you say ka-splat) Mars lander. Beagle 2 hails from the UK, and piggybacked its way to the red planet onboard the European Space Agency's orbiter Mars Express. Mars Express was succesfully inserted into orbit, whereas the where abouts of Beagle 2 are unknown.

NASA sent two rover missions to Mars. Spirit is the first rover. Opportunity is the second rover and should (if all goes to plan) be touching down very soon (Jan 24th).

And in additional Mars-eats-probes news, JPL is having problems communicating with Spirit.

From NASA:

"01.22.04 - Engineers Working on Spirit Communication Problem
The Mars Exploration Rover Spirit radioed a beep Thursday morning confirming that it had received a transmission from Earth. Still, it has not returned any data since early Wednesday. Flight-team engineers for NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Project are working to diagnose the cause of communications difficulties. MORE TO COME."

Hey, since there is such a good success rate, why don't we send a mission staffed with humans?
That wouldn't be you being a tad facetious now would it Buck :)

Can I volunteer every national-level elected official in the US gov't?

Volunteer away my fine feathered friend. Although, I'm sure they'd decline the offer and pay some else to go in their stead.

Then we'll send Tea (after she loses some weight). At least she'll be able to use all four limbs to control the spacecraft.

How would she manager when she got there? She would already have ....errhh, annihilated all the Gin in the spacecraft, and would need a quick way to generate more ? ;)

Loonie Mars - LOL - my imagination just went wild when I saw that picture. I can see him playing with the little rover, pressing buttons, pulling levers, and JPL/NASA are confused why they can't get solid communication with the thing.
