teh article

Newegg seemed to come up out of nowhere. This is the first time I've really seen any background information about it. Kind of amazing that it's a billion dollar business.

Interesting article. I didn't realize newegg held that much inventory. it makes sense given how fast they ship things, but I figured they had some other means.

"It's the most important thing we do in terms of assuring a quality experience," he says. "When you don't own your own inventory, you're really at the mercy of other entities. You can't control how soon the customer will receive their order. When we say we have it in stock. We have it in stock. When you order it, we can usually have the item picked, packed, and on the truck within three hours."

The other side to that is, every once in a while I need to cancel an order and find out that I can't because it's already on the truck.
Monitors, (non-Soltek) motherboards and cases are the only things I buy locally with any regularity. Newegg serves for everything else.

I'll consider buying pretty much anything from Newegg, except for 2 things:

1. Almost never any cable of any type.
2. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER ... NOT EVEN IN 9 BILLION YEARS NEVER ... will I make the mistake of ordering a hard drive from Newegg again.

I've ordered 6 hard drives from them. All of them were fine, what happened with yours?

Last time I tried, I discovered that Newegg had no clue how to safely package a hard drive for shipment. Mine arrive loose inside a box underfilled with only packaging peanuts, and had settled up against one side of the box. The only protection it had from the world at that side was the squashed plastic clamshell package.

wow, that was not my experieince with any of the drives I purchased. All of my drives (bought at different times) came in the plastic clamshell shipping container AND they were wrapped up in several layers of bubble wrap (taped closed). In addition to that, the box has always been stuffed with peanuts so that nothing moves around.

Newegg's packing can be inconsistent. I haven't had cause to complain about the way they ship hard drives (and I buy lots of them!), but just a couple minutes ago I got a box with a couple video cards, some modems and a whole lot of mice, that was only half-filled with peanuts. Plenty of room to slosh around on that one.

You have to wonder if the peanuts 'settle' or compack during shipping.
