Centralizing home storage...thoughts?

Rough number, but copying 1.42TB of data to both Centos/Samba and Server 2008 with essentially identical hardware and softRAID 5 arrays, looks like Server 2008 about 12% faster.

I'm rather surprised by that; Samba has always come up faster in my experience.
I guess I should repeat the experiment with hardware arrays.

What OS was the source machine that you were copying from? I've seen articles showing that Vista had better throughput to another vista/2008 machine compared to an XP to vista machine.

Source system is Server 2003. I'm copying from a three disk ICH10-based RAID0 to softRAID5s on each of Windows 2008 and Linux.

They're all on the same 1Gbit switch and they're all using the same 1Gbit Intel PCIe NIC.

Took 14 hours to copy the data to Server 2008 and 16.2 hours to the Centos machine. I didn't do an exact timing on Windows but on Linux I know how long it took the script to run since I didn't background the process.
