Did you even know about Compacting Folders?

I suspected deleted emails were being retained, but didn't know for sure until I was on Mozillazine a couple of weeks ago, looking for some unrelated info, and came across the compacting info.

As the article implies, compacting seems a little buggy -- even doing one folder at a time, it appears to stall. Hopefully v1.5 will be better.

Somewhere in time.
Folder compaction has been around since the Netscrape 4.x days, at least. If you just delete, the mail goes to trash and sits there (like Wreck Bin), and when you empty trash it compacts folders. Or, if you delete the message using Shift-Del (as I do), it disappears instantly, but the space the message was using is not returned. Over time, this non-returned space can be significant, and you can get it back by manually "File\Compact Folders" ing.
