I have a desktop pc with Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit , a Toshiba laptop with Win 7 Home Premium Edition 32 bit and a Lenovo laptop with Win 7 Home Premium Edition 64 bit. In each pc, the setting to turn off the display in the Power Options applet suddenly returns from my choice of "Never" to the default of "20 min." I've changed from "Never" to the max. of "5 hr.", with the same result. I can't tell you what occurs just before the change to the 20 min.default. It follows no obvious pattern.
You'll want to know what major programs I have in all three pcs, I'm sure. I have AVG Free 2014 which is always active. I also have Spybot Search & Destroy which I manually run. My settings on all three machines in the Power Settings boxes are identical, to "Never" turn off the display. I leave the desktop always ON, since a few months ago Sleep Mode stopped working and has locked the machine requiring a restart using the case's Reset button.
I removed the battery packs from each laptops since I'm rarely mobile, and I manually place each one in Sleep Mode when I leave the room for a long time. When any pc wakes from Sleep Mode, everything is in order. It's when I see the display on each pc has turned off, that I know my settings have been lost. Each laptop is always plugged into AC. I can't give any more information about what precedes the loss of of the setting. One more thing. When the time to turn off the display returns to 20 min. my power profile setting of "do not ask for the password when returning from Sleep Mode" changes to "ask for the password." This has been going on for at least two years. I'm first writing about it now, because it seems that these symptoms are becoming more frequent and unpredictable.
The only other commonality between the pcs is that all of them are part of my FiOS network, the laptops wirelessly and the desktop via an ethernet cable. I'm getting the max. speeds specified in my service with Verizon. I'm wondering if a router glitch could be causing the problem?
