As there's so much talk about the temperature "issue" with the prescotts, which one would you choose from these two? This is if i decide to upgrade my fileservers mobo to a P4C800-E Deluxe.

INTEL P4 FSB800 2.6G BOX S478 NORTHWOOD

INTEL P4 FSB800 2.8GHZ BOX S478 PRESCOTT

My other choice was an Asus PC-DL and 2 xeons, but as I thought about putting this in my file server the dually system would be a bit wasted. As for a single Xeon, I thought the 533 vs. 800 FSB might have some impact on the system.

I only checked on these as they have Intel GIGe CSAs integrated in them.

The 2.4 Xeon is also about 50-100euros more expensive compared to the northwood/prescotts.

Why do you need this kind of horsepower for a file server? What's the interface connection?

As I have said before, if you are considering an ASUS board, buy a Supermicro. You will get far more for your money, and it will last a lot longer.

If I'm buying new, I'll rather buy something as powerfull as possible, it's easier that way for me to get rid of the stuff later. I change my own hardware quite a lot, and build computers for others and that is sometimes a good opportunity to get rid of my "old" stuff.

I can't easily get Supermicro, couldn't find a reseller here for them.
And I've had good luck with Asus.

Good reasons.

In that case, go for the dual Asus Xeon boards, and unload later, or, add another processor?
My experience has been Xeons tend to do business functions way better then other cpus do, Athlons, in particular...

I'm less than overwhelmed with the performance of our Precision 450's with dual 2.4GHz 512KB cache Xeons (533 bus) here at work. I'm going to have to get one of those shuttle A64 duallies when they are released and bring it in to work for a performance comparison.
