Really cool idea!! If it weren't for NHTSA, it could probably be made to work in real life with some major compromises to other areas of the vehicle. However, the B-pillar is a very important member in the vehicle for both side impact protection as well as roof crush resistance. With NHTSA's requirement for roof crush resistance increasing to 2.5x the curb mass of the vehicle, it would probably not work in the real world since the B-pillar on 4-door vehicles would be eliminated and you'd need to use un-obtanium for the roof rails and/or make them ridiculously huge in cross-sectional area.

Also, I'd hate to see the door trim start on fire after being close to the catalytic converter for too long. It's definitely worth further study, IMO though.

As a cyclist I love it! No more getting doored by idiots exiting their cars without looking. Well, I could still hit the idiot themself, but they're a lot softer than a car door. Given the size of a lot of auto drivers these days, if I hit them they would probably just :bounce: off anyway.

As for being made to work, why not combine both B-pillars into a single one, and relocate it in between the backs of the two front seats (where it won't get in anyone's way)? That would probably provide superior crash resistance for a given amount of structural mass compared to what we have now. Or the B-pillar can remain where it is now, and you have a pair of doors on either side instead of only one.

As for any worries about being near catalytic converters, like incandescent lamps, mechanical hard disks, or CRTs, the days of internal combustion engines are probably numbered anyway. By the time doors like this are designed into cars, there won't be any catalytic convertor or exhaust to worry about.

The B piller could be made part of the door. It would retract inside the door as it started down. Then move back up out of the door into a recess in the roof. Once locked into position, it would hold the roof up.

Jatech LLC will be coming into my work on April 7 to give a presentation and have Q&A about their system. Should be interesting.

One of those Lincolns with the disappearing door sold on ebay some time last year. The seller was saying that most of the demo cars were scrapped/enforced destruction by Ford as usual with a prototype:

Was a damn sweet idea in my opinion. My friend has a MKVIII and the doors on that thing are huge.
