Don't like the titles for users

Newbie -> No Life, not good.

Can we get rid of the titles altogether, please? Post count alone seems fine to me. (I don't judge people, exspecially here, on a basis of their post count, it's just more of a interesting statistic.)

Thoughts?

I suggest the following:

Apprentice
Jester
Sage
Veteran
Fixture
No Life
What's Life?

These categories to be assigned to post categories at random:

i.e., if the server thinks that the number 7 looks good today, we have:

0 to 10 posts: What's Life?
10 to 50 posts: Jester
50 to 250 posts: Veteran
250 to 500 posts: Sage
500 to 1000 posts: Fixture
1000 to 5000 posts: No Life
Over 5000 posts: Apprentice

On the other hand, if the server thinks that the number 3 is nice today, then:

0 to 10 posts: Jester
10 to 50 posts: No Life
50 to 250 posts: Apprentice
250 to 500 posts: Veteran
500 to 1000 posts: Sage
1000 to 5000 posts: What's Life?
Over 5000 posts: Fixture

So do your days go from being seen as a jester to having no life, James? I know mine do.

Last time I looked at SR's forum, Jason had 749 posts. I don't think this makes him either an expert, a master or a sage.

We could actually Label the categories more appropiately:

0-10 Prodigy
11-50 Genius
51-250 Smart
251-500 Average
501-1000 Dumb
1001-5000 Stupid
5001+ Moron

Ugh. That's terrible. Where's Maxtor?

bit : 10
nibble: 100
byte : 500
kilobyte: 1000
megabyte : 2500
gigabyte: 5000
terabyte: 7500
exabyte: 10000

Fair in that it doesn't indicate rank, at least.

I see that I have gone from "newbie" to "squire". I am surprised that Doug didn't make the under-50-posts-group "peons" just to get a dig at me.

How can Tea be a Squire or Lord, etc.?
I never figured you for a male chauvinist pig Doug. Let's gender "neutralize" these Tarzan!

Squire Person
Nobel Person
Sire Person
Lord Person
Cavalier Person
Knight Person
Crusader Person

If you please!

Oh, I'm a Knight Person allright. I practically never get up before lunchtime.

But it's allright Flagreen, you may call me Sire if you wish.

I respond very positively to flowers too.

Diamonds I have a passion for.

(I don't actually like the things, but, well, I learned a thing or two from Tannin, like, for example, how much you can hock rings for. Buys a lot of gin and tonic, a diamond ring does.)

I quite like Doug's titles, but all joking aside, they are a bit gender biased.

I do like Mercutio's - they're non gender-specific, they're computer/storage related, and don't link post count with knowledge - nice! I'm not completely sold on them, though... perhaps a bit more thought is in order...

Or we could just do away with titles, like I suggested at the outset.

How about

  • Couch Potato 1
  • Twiddling Thumbs 100
  • Smelling the Roses 500
  • Watching Paint Dry 1000
  • Counting Stars 1500
  • Wasting Away 1750
  • Sleep Deprivation 2000

These aren't that great, but since I took the time to write them, I figured I'd just post them.

I would like these, but they will soon be obsolete when Serial ATA arrives.

I like the current titles. To hell with "gender-specific". Anyone who's intelligent can figure these are just unformal designations. I won't dress in pink just to make the other half of humanity feel at ease.

I would be very surprised to ever see a female member complain about the titles, would they remain the same.

Just my 2¢.

Will there ever even be a chance of discrimination in this forum? Taking a look at the member list, it doesn't seem like it. (Tea is not included)

Well, SR has at least one female member - someone named "Christina" has been posting recently. AD's fiance posted to SR in the past.

So it's possible, at least.

Indeed, my fiance did post to SR. I'm not sure if she'll head over here - she very well might. But I doubt she'd mind.

HOWEVER, let me tell you all a story. I've beein into medical stuff for a while. When I was in high school, my aunt noticed my interest in medicine and gave me her textbook on medical/surgical nursing (she's a nurse). I read it and found parts interesting, but it really PISSED ME OFF that the nurse was always referred to as "she" or "her". Since then, I try my best to be gender neutral. I think we should also raise to the occasion and make this site gender-neutral.

I like 'em all. Why can't Doug just continue to rotate them at whim? That's far more interesting, and confusing enough that the labels don't become badges of honour or shame.

I like variety with my cornflakes.

This IMHO has been the finest suggestion so far!

Doug, better change the Squire, Noble, Knight stuff... Most people live in a republic! :mrgrn:

And since everybody suggested:
0-9 Tape
10-99 Floppy Disk
100-249 CD-ROM
250-499 IDE Hard Disk
500-999 SCSI Hard Disk
1000-1999 RAM Drive
2000-2499 Quantum Storage
2500-4999 Alien Technology

Hah, good one. But I like Tannin's version more. Like Mercutio said, include Maxtor, please! Actually, Seagate is missing. Perhaps we should add models too.

I think this would be more appropriate:

IBM 75GXP: 1
Seagate U-6: 10
Quantum Bigfoot: 25
Quantum LCT: 50
Samsung SpinPoint: 100
WD1200AB:250
Maxtor D740X (BB): 500
Maxtor D740X (FDB): 1000
WD1200JB: 2500
Maxtor Atlas 10K-III: 5000
Seagate Cheetah X15 36LP: 5000+

Seagate Cheetah X15 36LP: 5000+
With the above table, we won't be an Atlas 10K III for long, just for 1 post. Oh well, by the time I reach 5000, the Atlas 10K III will be obsolete anyway.

Ahh, the thing about my list, NRG, is that they are all defunct drive manufacturers. Excect Western Digital. That last one for WD was a joke. But we could use IBM instead. Or Fujutisu perhaps.

(As for listing the SpinPoint below a WD AB, that's a joke too, I presume. Obviously, the Samsungs are substantially better drives.)

Actually I was putting them in order of speed (or something) then I thought the 75GXP doesn't deserve to be this high, might as well put it at the bottom.
