External Storage Array

Are any of those relatively inexpensive 4-5 bay external storage systems any good? I was wondering if it would be worth getting one to consolidate backups to one logical drive. The total space could be less than the primary drives, since they all some free space. It would need to be eSATA or USB 3.0.

The ones on Newegg look like they need SiL controllers. I don't know if that's a requirement for them to operate but SiL controllers are against my religion.
