I know we have all our hobbies and stuff, (I personally like the outdoors; camping, fishing, 4WD'ing, running (10K and half-marathon), bushwalking/hiking), but I also have another 'geeky' hobby as my wife calls it.

Today I've uploaded the latest release of the compiler I have been writing for the last 2+yrs.

It can be found here: http://chewy509.110mb.com/b0.html

So what are your 'geeky' hobbies...

I read comic books and science fiction and collect enough pornography that it qualifies as some kind of science project. :)
And I build PCs and help people with computer problems on internet forums for my own amusement. That's pretty damned geeky.

On the other hand, I've just described literally everything I do in life that's not a basic biological function...

I wrote a compiler for a CS class about 12 years ago but as a rule I look at programming in much the same way as I look forward to scrubbing out my toilet.

hobby?
I ride my bike every now and then.
I build machines (PC's) for friends and acquaintances every now and then.
I used to read books. Now I spend time in SF (not a bad swap, eh!)

I've had a few hobbies over the years that were geeky, but that I no longer spend any time on. Building computers is very close to falling into that category.

As a kid, my chief hobby was electronics. I was also a part-time musician for several years, and then I used to obsess about listening to music (not just HiFi equipment, but collecting the music and experiencing it in an ideal environment).

All of that's fallen by the wayside now, although I'm planning to dust off the soldering iron and build an IR beam alarm for my garage (from a kit - I've no interest in spending time on it).

Cars used to be a hobby, i.e. modifying them in useful ways. These days, it's too expensive and I don't believe there's anywhere near as much point. Cars in general have far better dynamics and engines than they used to, our cities are more congested, and around here we have Speed Cameras.

Actually, cars are probably still a bit of a hobby, in terms of trying to get them fixed right, selecting the best tires, etc. :) But I now see them more as a means of getting from A to B, and how much money I can save in running costs.

For the last 20-odd years, I've been interested in the thermal characteristics of buildings (every few years it has practical application!). Air conditioning design has become an interest as well (hands up those who know what latent capacity is and what effect it has in different climates).

Lighting has also been a long-term interest. An offshoot of that is my current obsession: flashlights (or torches to everyone outside the US).

At work, I'm trying to decipher a couple of 200,000 line programs that have no documentation. This weekend, I'm going to try again to make sense of a 50,000 line program for a client and fix it so I can actually bill them. My attitude towards programming has become not dissimilar to Merc's. The odds of me doing anything in assembler as a hobby are somewhere between nil and null.

I take my hat off to someone who still has the enthusiasm to do what you've done, Chewy.

That is impressive Chewy. I took assembler (mips) in college (Temple Univesity). I was probably the best in the class and it was interesting. But coding anything complex in assemlber must involve some crazy state juggling in your head while you are programming.

Electronics

Model Railroading (just making structures and detailing trains as I don't have room for a layout)

Cycling

Computers

Trainsimming

Railfanning (mostly subways)

Lighting (both general and flashlights)

Refrigeration (peltier experiments and such)

Very occasional coin collecting but it hasn't been a major interest in years

Television (again not a major interest but I do it enough to classify it as a hobby)

A lot of these interests overlap. Some are both hobby and business interests. I should probably include eating and watching Chinese females on the list as I easily do both as much as some of my other hobbies. :diablo:

Lately, since I don't have the desire or motivation to do anything else, I've been scanning the various craigslist metros for the most bizarre personals ad I can find. This has replaced my previous hobby of find the weirdest crap available on ebay.

Somewhere in time.
I learned to program in assembler. Steve Gibson (SpinRite) is a fan of it too. If you know what you're doing, it ain't bad, and your proggies will run faster than a scalded ape. They will also be very small. In this day and age, knowing how to do this (I last did it in 1983) is a feat, congrats, Chewy!
