I am omnipresent
I've been quite tempted to try the Seagate 500GB Hybrid drive but I can't quite justify it for myself.

I'm sure that Seagate is old news. We really need larger amounts of flash - maybe even the option to use it as a separate drive.

I was referring to Seagate's past firmware problems.

I suppose I shouldn't mock them too much since I just bought two 500GB 7200.12's for my new backup server build. :skepo: For years all I bought was Seagate HD's (mainly due to the 5 year warranty) and had no issues with them. More recently it's been all Samsung.

You bought new 500GB drives? Why not get at least 1TB drives, which are very cheap now?

Because the cheapest 1TB 7200 RPM drive I would buy is $70 shipped (WD / Seagate / Samsung). The 500GB 7200.12's were $39 each shipped. I could have gotten by with 40GB drives, so there's no point getting 1TB drives when they're not much cheaper per GB than the 500GB drives.

Are they still aiming this at laptops? That seems like the one market where this is totally not worth it.

Other than loading OS and some apps a little faster, I think the flash boost is overrated. I have the normal 500GB 720000 RPM drive and it is not appreciably faster than a good 5400 RPM drive at that capacity.

You have a 720,000 RPM drive. I wouldn't call that normal. Normal is 5,400-7,200 with high speed at 15,000 RPM. Now I see why you think flash is over-rated.

And idea if they are loading certain often changed blocks onto the SSD portion or is it entire files.

Of course not... He's ambidextrous. He uses his left foot to work the power controls system and his right foot to work the keyboard.
