I, on behalf of Nkulo's family decided to solicit for assistance to move the sum of US$21,500,000.00 (Twenty-one million five hundred thousand United States Dollars) out of this country to your personal account, believing that the funds will be saved in your bank account for my investment...

I think you should advantage of this amazing offer, iGary! :p

Welcome back i.

Thanks Coug. Truthfully I'm just passing through and paused to add some spam of my own.

I miss hanging out at this site. I'm sure a lot has happened in the high-tech industry over the past 6 months and I can tell you that I haven't heard about any of it. For the past several months I've been working very hard at mediocre jobs and barely making ends meet (for this I got a university degree?). I'm going to have to take a hard look at canceling my net access next month - even if I had the money I don't have much free time now to use it. Life can change so fast sometimes. I wish I was having better luck in the job-search department.

Wow. Sorry ... that wasn't meant to sound so depressing.

Hope all the old regulars here are still doing well. :)

Lovely to see you're still around i. There's always net access at the library by the way.

Nice non sequitur above, BTW. :)

Here is another person who fell for the scam, and lost $750,000 ($250,000 of which was money that he scammed from his friends, for which he's going to jail).

the best piece of spam i ever got was back when ebay would publish your email address. i won an auction and got something with the subject 'ebay transaction failed?'

the body was: 'i hope not, because your subscription did! you are now subscribed to our mailing list'

if i was a spammer that's the attitude i'd strive for

I have a small collection of Cthulhu items - including three different plush ones, sitting on my desk at work. I do this because several people I work with have stacks of way-too-cute beany babies on their monitors and I just kind of wanted a different take on that decor (anyone ever seen a goth dressed in pink?)

The spam is good.

But just because Lovecraftian horror is an interest of mine, if you've got a moment, you can read the story that gave us Cthulhu in the first place. Also The Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward, the coining of the term "Ghoul" in Pickman's Model (link is to google cache of a PDF), or maybe the terrible tale of www.gizmology.net/lovecraft/works/h_west.pdf+Herbert+West,+Reanimator+full+text&hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=UTF-8]Herbert West, Re-Animator (ditto)[/url].

Someone with a good deal of time on his hands might even consider to the very large source of most of the above, Gizmology.

Lovecraft's fiction is referenced more-or-less constantly in mainstream media. He's a direct literary descendent of E.A. Poe, but it's his work that basically create the genre of horror fiction. His creations show up everywhere from Robert Howard's Conan novels to Batman (Arkham Asylum).

I'm not a goth.

I wear khaki trousers, black sneakers and solid-color tshirts (yes, one of them is pink) every day of my life. Sometimes I wear a sport coat, when I have to look dressed up.

Google Image Search for Goths. I couldn't possibly be bothered to spend that much time dressing to go out.

That one is VERY similar to a spam message I received about 3 years ago -- nearly identical wording, except it was for dustbins, and also in Changzhou (pron. Chang-Jo). Hmmm...

I've lately been receiving a few odd spam E--mails. The subject titles are pretty absurd, with random titles that look as if they were a romp through an English language dictionary.

I wonder what they are up to with subjects like this. Are they trying to fool E-mail client software or E-mail server software that these messages are NOT spam?

NRG,

One has to wonder what the hell you're looking online to receive spam about whips. Please consider using AdAware or Spybot after your "suspicious" browsing sessions.

Plus, it is absolutely not possible to have internet browsing habits that're more "suspicious" than mine, and *I* don't get email about horse whips very often.

The idea is to defeat the latest trend in spam blocking. Spam tends to have a fairly limited vocabulary, and can be readily told from real email by a vocab check. Hence the trend to include lots of random dictionary words in the message.

Unfortunately (for the spammer) this also winds up with a message that seems to have nothing at all to do with viagra or unmentionable enlargers or holidays in Florida, and can be presumed to be pretty useless as advertising.

So why do they bother?

Beats me.

Yes Tannin, that's more or less about what I was thinking (vocabulary).

The numbers of these E-mail absurdities seems to have gone down recently, but I did just receive another one that seems to use a new twist replete with misspellings in the spam portion:

I have a question for you all, what type of person would fall for this type of rubbish,is it maybe the God fearing type of person that goes to church on a Sunday and believes that everything is right with the world as long as he is making money on the side.

That's to beat spam-blockers too (as you have no doubt surmised for yourself, digitally generated one).

Here are some random examples from amongst the hundreds, probably thousands, of clues my spam filter uses. Any of these in the message (or header, it depends on the particular case) and it's flagged as spam and diverted such that it never reaches the in-box.

I recently returned from a 10-day period away from my personal E-mail to find *only* 1800+ messages -- of which 16 were NOT spam.

However, I might add, the last time I was away from my personal E-mail for an extended amount of time (11 days that time), which was back around the end of September / beginning of October when the Nachi / Welch virus first hit, was far worse. Fearing the worst ahead of time, I finally gothome and logged into my E-mail account to find nearly 12 THOUSAND messages, *most* of which were 140 KB ~ 180 KB each! Fortunately, I was able to download a message listing from the mail server and then deleted everything that wasn't spam or virus payloads without downloading any of these messages over my 56K connection.

I noticed from the date/time stamp in the listing that as many as 10 or more messages per minute had come in. But, even as I was cleaning up the mess spam and junk was still streaming in like mad. I had to delete another 40 or 50 messages in less than an hour.

ATTENTION:THIS IS HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL!
DEAR FRIEND,

SET UP BY THE PRESENT OBASANJO LED GOVERNMENT AS A FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
INTERVENTION TO HELP IN REBUILDING THE NEGLECTED,BATTARED AND
ENVIROMENTAL POLLUTED REGION OF THE NIGER DELTA. NIGER DELTA IS THE SOUTH-SOUTH
GEOGRAPHICAL AREA OF FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA. THE REGION IS ENDORSED
WITH NATURAL RESOURCES WHICH CONSTITUTE ABOUT 95% OF OUR GROSS NATIONAL
INCOME. CONSEQUENTLY TO THE EXPLORATION OF OIL AND NATURAL GAS, THERE
HAS BEEN ECOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION IN THIS REGION. RATHER
UNFORTUNATE, THE REGION LACKS MOST INFRASTRUCTURAL AMENITIES. THESE AND
MUCH MORE HAVE NECESSITATED THE ESTABLISHMENT OF NIGER-DELTA
DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION. SEQUEL TO THE PASSING OF BILL BY THE NATIONAL HOUSE OF
ASSEMBLY (THE LEGISLATIVE ORGAN OF THE GOVERNMENT) AND DULLY ACCENTED TO
BY THE PRESIDENT, LEGITIMIZING THE OPERATIONS OF THE COMMISSION BY AN
ACT OF LAW. THE COMMISSION HAS, THEREFORE, BEEN CONSTITUTIONALLY
EMPOWERED TO IMPLEMENT A POLICY WHICH WILL RELATIVELY ADDRESS THE LONG
STANDING NEGLECT OF THE REGION. IT MAJOR CONCERN WAS DIRECTED IN THE AREA OF
FLOODING AND COASTAL EROSION, SEDIMENTATION AND SILITATION,SOCIAL
ECONOMIC PROBLEMS,HEALTH PROBLEM, OIL SPILAGE, AIR POLLUTION ETC.
ENCOURAGINGLY, THE COMMISSION HAVING SUCCESSFULLY INHERITED FUNDS FROM FINE

THE ETHNIC, POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS SITUATION IN THE COUNTRY,WE ARE
CONVINCED THAT THE PRESIDENT OF FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, WHO HAS BEEN
INSENSITIVE TO THE PLIGHT OF NIGER-DELTA PEOPLE, WILL DEFINITELY NOT BE
RETURNED TO OFFICE FOR A THIRD TERM TENURE IN THE NEXT POLITICAL
DISPENSATION (PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION), THEREFORE RETURNING NIGER-DELTANS TO
BLACK YEARS OF MILITARY RULE. THIS IS CONSEQUENTLY TO FACT THAT HAUSA
DOMINATED NIGERIAN MILITARY AND THEIR POLITICAL CLASS ARE INSENSITIVE TO
THE PLIGHT OF THE NIGER-DELTANS. IT COULD BE RECALLED DURING THE RULE OF
HAUSA, THAT NIGER-DELTA REGION RECORDED THE HIGHEST CHILD IMMORTALITY
IN OUR GENERATION; OUR RIVERS WERE POLLUTED BY THE OIL COMPANIES AND
FISHERY BEING OUR PRIMARY OCCUPATION, THERE WAS ACUTE STARVATION ACROSS
THE REGION. MYSELF AND COLLEAGUES BEING NATIVES OF THIS REGION, HAVE
DECIDED TO SAVE FOR THE RAINING DAYS FOR THE BENEFIT OF OUR PEOPLE. ON THE
DEMISE OF THE PRESENT GOVERNMENT IN NIGERIA AND NIGER-DELTA DEVELOPMENT
COMMISSION SCRAPPED, WE HAVE PLEDGED TO ESTABLISH A NON-GOVERNMENTAL
ORGANIZATION THAT IS NIGER-DELTANS ORIENTED TO SEE TO THE NEEDS OF OUR
PEOPLE. IT IS IN THIS NGO'S ACCOUNT THAT THE FUND SHALL BE REPATRIATED BY
YOU.I AWAIT YOUR IMMEDIATE RESPONSE. THANK YOU...

this has probably been menioned already in the thread but I wouldn't remember, www.whatsthebloodypoint.com

The guy who owns the site leads on the Nigerian scammers for ages and the results are posted there for all to see.

On a similar note, the other day I bid on a Mac on Ebay for a friend. I placed a big of £300 for a G4-500/640mb ram/Zip/DVD drive etc and minutes later was offered the exact same machine off ebay for £300 by someone. Highly unlikely as such a computer is not very popular and it would cost much more than £300.

I accepted the offer (knowing it was a scam), then the scammer promptly said I must do him a Western Union transfer and that incidentally he was located in Romania. He would then send me the "laptop" (although the machine I was bidding for was not a laptop!)

I then said I'd do the transfer, but what OS was installed on the machine? "Windows XP" was his answer... on a Mac!

Anyway, I managed to get him to run to the Western Union shop several times before I told him to piss off and get a life.

Was satisfying.

Very nice. :thumbright: I think for good measure I would have also told him that I informed the authorities of his little side business. :diablo: If nothing else, it would have had his heart up a few beats every time a police car was nearby. Bad boys, bad boys, what you gonna do, what you gonna do when they come for you, bad boys. :mrgrn:

I then said I'd do the transfer, but what OS was installed on the machine? "Windows XP" was his answer... on a Mac!

Good work.

We need an emoticon that's smoking a cigarr, sipping on a drink and generally feels very happy and content with himself.

Dredging up a thread from SF's antedeluvian period, one so old that JamesW, honold and PeeWee all posted in it (ddrueding says "Who?"), I give you the awesome and hilarious story of a 419 scammer scammed back.

How scammed was he? If you scroll through the exchange, you'll see that the scam/spam "victim" actually convinced the scammer to carve a Commodore 64 out of a block of wood. There are photos. They are teh awesome.

Amazing . . . although I actually genuinely feel sorry for the original scammer.
