We all know there's not a lot of difference between an i3 and most i5 CPUs - just clock speed and a (slightly) faster graphics core. I've just been looking at laptop CPUs and surely Intel deserves some sort of obfuscation award with their efforts over the years?

What's the difference between a 2-core i7 such as the 620M and the i5-540M?

Answer: 0.13GHz and 1MB of cache (4MB vs 3MB).

What's the difference between the i5-520m and the i3-370M?

Answer: 0.533GHz in 'turbo' mode and 100MHz max graphics clock (766 vs 667MHz).

What's the difference between the i3-330E and the new Pentium P6000?

Answer: 0.27GHz and hyperthreading.

What's the difference between the Pentium P6000 and the new Celeron P4500?

Answer: 1MB of cache (3MB vs 2MB).

But when I rechecked for this post, I found the last comparison was wrong. Only the Celeron has virtualization support! :boom:

The i3 also adds SSE4.1 & 4.2, but I doubt anyone cares.

Yup. That is a bunch of maddness.

I brought this up with a relative who works there (in R&D), and he can't keep their internal codenames straight, either. ;)

Have you gone the extra step and looked at the price differences for these small features? I haven't.

For the W3520 and I7 920 we are talking about maybe $20 difference for the same processor and to add ECC memory support. Until yesterday the same was pretty much true of the W3550 and the I7 950 but they just dropped the 950 to $300.

What's crazy is that people don't get this.

For the grant shendig, our laptop processor options happen to be 620m, 540m, and 520m. The IT guy is so confused why we would rather have SSDs than the 620m.

It's just an app for ios devices, I guess because that's what you will have with you when shopping?

I checked it out and it doesn't contain mobile or server chips so generally useless so far.
