There are three iphones, an itouch and two ipads involved in this. There are also three Windows notebooks, two Roku players, a Wii and an Xbox360 that connect to the same wireless network in his home, none of which have any issue at all.

In his office: An AT&T iphone4 and sometimes his ipad.

He's telling me that the Apple devices will connect to 802.11, operate fine for about 10 minutes and then disconnect. The only way he's found to make them reconnect at this point is to turn 802.11 completely off and then back on.

If I go stand in his office and connect a notebook or my phone, it's rock solid. I was over there over the weekend and I couldn't find any other 2.4 or 5GHz source other than his wireless router.

I think I may have noticed that my phone doesn't notice when the WAP goes down (powered down). It may also have difficulty knowing what to do when when the WAP comes back. [/untested wild hair]

Anyone have a cheap, or favorite way of transfering data, like ebooks, from a PC, with let's say Guetenberg, to the ipad2?

USB cable? ImTOO software, etc.?

Thanks

Kindle was easy to plug in, and transfer ebooks from Gutenberg.
Using the USBcable from the ipad, I plugged it in but, it wouldn't transfer files, in fact the drive doesn't even show up.

More research...

I tried that. Have a weird login problem, person doesn't know her password.
So, we can't login on the itunes site.

I tried the instructions to sync books, but, didn't work. Doesn't matter, since it takes seconds to download the books from Gutenberg.

I now feel dirty, used, and abused. Apple software has this really dirty, porno/scumware type feeling when using it.

I can't believe I installed it on one of my PC's. Anyone have any antibiotics around?

Just a quick update on wireless weirdness: At my customer's insistence, I've tried three different firmware revisions on the Trendnet router and screwed around with the wireless encryption scheme, going from WPA2 to WPA to WEP to nothing. I also switched to channel 1 rather than 11.

The icrap still drops connection in his office.

He really wants me to fix this and at this point I feel like I need a spectrum analyzer or something.

Bad news is you might have to learn something about apple and itunes here.

Like i said, known issue on older firmware/baseband firmware. You should take his least important device and do a "restore as new" in itunes using ios 4.3 now. Use a legit ipsw from apple, not some custom cooked firmware.

If he is jailbroken or doing the restore as previous backup it keeps settings from the previous installation that can cause problems. Restore as new is sort of like doing a new generic install of windows after it self destructs.

I believe you are on the right track and it isn't the wireless routers etc.

Because your issue seems to be convincing this guy, have you considered leaving a laptop onsite (in his office?) to log wireless strength? I've been playing with the free version of Xirrus here; without checking, I think it would suffice. It tracks all WAPs (and channels) and can log the result.

Of course, an Android app that did the same thing would send a rather stronger message. :bomb:

He's fairly convinced that the issue is some kind of incompatibility between Apple devices and everything else. He knows he doesn't have issues with his notebooks. But he's not giving up the Apple stuff. He likes it too much.

I sent him a link on updating the firmware on his stuff but I have no idea whether he'll do it or not.

In fact I just got an email yesterday that he's getting an iPad 2 sometime this week.
