After David's and Coug's experiences, I'm increasingly nervous about this Samsung SP2504C I have here.

Does anyone know how to interpret the SMART attributes? I'm worried that the Raw Read Error Rate seems kinda high - currently 0x984 (2436), as well as the Hardware ECC Recovered - 0x22F063E2 (a staggering 586,179,554). Just today, the Reallocated Sector Count popped up with 0x17 (23), which actually drops the corresponding SMART value to 98 (threshold 10). :(

Raw values mean very little without a decoder ring. The specification does not define what they mean. One implementation I am familiar with uses the RAW field simply as a counter of the number of bits transferred (with a few orders of magnitude removed) with the actual calculations for error rate handled in the background and reflected in the attribute value.
