The terms master and slave really are flawed for HDD use anyway. Since they have the connotation of one controlling the other when, in fact, neither control the operation of eachother and are instead controlled by (you guessed it) a controller.

wait! is that PC? Henceforth the word "controller" will no longer be used and will instead be known as the superintendant.

I tend to think something like device 0 and device 1 would be more appropriate given the way everything really works. With S-ATA the whole master/slave designation is out anyway.

Wait a minute? Isn't motherboard a degrading, sexist term as well? Wouldn't mainboard be more politically correct? And let's not even get started on male/female plugs. :mrgrn:

On a more serious note, don't these people have anything more productive to do with their time?

Or MOTHERBOARD with integrated FLOPPY controller, dual ide channels for two MASTER and two SLAVE drives, scsi for CHAINING, firewire for punishment (CANDLES anyone?)...let's the forget the POWER(supply) the master has over the slave, channel BONDAGE (possible with *nix), samba for SHARING your slave (drives), NETWORKING for your access to other slaves. :eekers:

And of course it is possible to SHAVE (some milliseconds off of ) your slave (drive) with proper TUNING, and by not securing everything you just might VIBRATE the whole thing to pieces.

Right...in that case I don't think there are too many "not offending" words available...

By the way, the ATA/ATAPI standards has not used the Master/Slave nomenclature for a while, it has been Device 0, Device 1, etc.
