Least awful vomit box

I still have wireless issues. There is not an easy way to attach to various wireless networks. That is, the new network tool would work great if it worked for me. The range is severely reduced if I use anything other than the basic tool. THAT is the suck.

I'm embarassed to say I could not figure out how to install an app (i.e download and install Firefox to the latest version) in Ubuntu. Is it easier with Feisty? My father-in-law is a great candidate for Ubuntu since he doesn't need office and just does email and internet. Can you import OE messages into Feisty's email client?

Thunderbird can import OE stuff.

Installing apps is the thing that Ubuntu is super good at. You use Synaptic or just click to open a .rpm or a .deb or a .tgz and your package manager should handle it.

Or you can just type sudo apt-get install (program name). Very slick. The only problem I have is then figuring out where in the launch bar menu the new program was put.

Any issue with looking at PrOn sites using Unbuntu? Issues with that will probably be a a problem for the person I'm thinking of.

Huh? Pr0n is pretty universal.

Actually, in Ubuntu after running Automatix all my videos (not porn) played great.

Next time I boot into Ubuntu I'll test out some different file formats. But I'm pretty sure I was able to play avi's just fine. Automatix includes a codec pack that I installed - too me maybe 2 minutes and 2 brain cells. If I'm able to get video playback going it can't be that hard.

Some .wmv files are problematic under linux. WMV is a common format on for-pay porn sites (e.g danni.com) since it can be copy protected. There are ways around the copy protection on Windows, such as fraps. Adult torrent sites generally offer the same content with protection stripped, and those files will usually play fine.

I don't know what he'll be looking at...probably just stuff like watchersweb.com but I do know he/we get the occasional video clip from friends via email that contains some 'adult content'. Don't want him to miss out, of course. :-P Don't want to ruin his first impression on Linux. It will be a while though. Probably on his next computer if he'd like to save some $ and not have to buy his OS.

So far, I am happy with my Dell E521 and decided to get it for these reasons:

1. Much needed boost in processing power for photo editing (Athlon XP 2200+ to A64x2 5000+)

2. I got it for a great price (~$270 in savings)

3. It included a legal copy of Vista for cheap

4. I got #1-3 for significantly less than I ever could if I would have built it on my own

5. I couldn't re-use parts from existing PCs to save money, as practically everything I have has been rendered obsolete by the wholesale shift of interface standards: PS/2 --> USB, DDR --> DDR2, AGP --> PCIe, PCI --> PCIe, and PATA --> SATA

So far, the Dell-ness of the PC has not presented any significant problems that have marred the user experience. The bloatware really was a minor concern. The biggest issues to date have been with the operating systems and application incompatibility, but this has nothing to do with it being a Dell.

In retrospect, sometimes I do wish that I had built my own PC to be able to use an overclocked C2D for three reasons: (1) I don't think people have been able to extract more processing power from lower end CPUs through overclocking since the Celeron 300A. That makes a C2D setup a relative bargain; (2) I find that even an A64x2 5000+ is not fast enough for painless photo editing; and (3) the C2D is just more efficient in terms of processing speed vs power/heat. I was contemplating getting a 6000+ as a drop-in CPU upgrade, but I would be almost doubling the CPU power consumption and heat generation from 65 W to 125 W!

89 W? I guess that's doable, although I would much prefer to keep it to 65 W as it is now. It already generates enough heat. Add that to my other box, and my study is already too hot, especially with heat waves like we're having now.
