How will Max Payne run on a system with these specs.:

Motherboard: Intel BX Chipset
CPU: Celeron II 950 Mhz
GFx Card: TNT2 16MB AGP
RAM: 384MB
O/S: WinXP

Any recommendations for how to get the most out of this game with this system?

You might have to keep the resolution down, but it should be OK. I played through max payne with a 1.2 GHz T-bird (not much more than your 950), Radeon 64 DDR and 512 MB rams with no problems. A times it got slow, but it was like using bullet-time for free. ;) At that time I was using win2k which is a little slower for gaming. Granted I have a little more video speed over the TNT2, but I think you will be OK.

System Requirements

Minimum Requirements:
450MHz AMD / Intel Processor
96 MB RAM
16MB Direct3D Compatible Graphics Card

Recommended System:

700 MHz AMD / Intel Processor
128 MB RAM
32 MB Direct3D Compatible Graphics Card

Generic requirements:

DirectX 8.0
DirectSound compatible sound card

Full install: 830 MB
Minimum install: 530 MB

Minimum install will load the levels from the game cd. Full installation is recommended for optimal performance.

The TNT2 isn't a directX 8 part... directX 6... maybe 7... in hardware I believe... So the faster than recommended CPU is a good thing. Turn off the goodies as they are sure to use the features of directX 8 where as the base settings will probably mostly rely on effects that can be handled in hardware by the gfx card.

I think the system will run it fine, although a gfx card update may be required to run at higher resolutions with the goodies.

There's quite a step between a T'bird 1.2GHz and a 950MHz Celeron with a crippled 128K L2 cache and 100MHz FSB. Same goes for the Radeon 64MB DDR and a 16MB TNT2.

I think playing Max on Clocker's box will be a Payne. Adios eye candy if you don't want to recite all your known swears because of frame drops.

BTW, the graphic card recommendation based solely on the amount of RAM it has is laughable.

Would a 64mb Radeon 7000 be a nice step-up comparted to the tnt2? I wonder if there is a site that just compares graphics cards in a database or something...

Thanks for your input guys....

If I remember correctly, the radeon 7000 is on par or above my old Radeon 64DDR. The two cards could be identicle, as I think the 7000 came out right after I got mine. ATI may have simply renamed it, but I don't know if that is entirely true because they do list the cards separately on their site for drivers and specs.

I do think it would be a nice step up from a TNT2. The radeon may perform more on-board processing, in turn freeing up the celeron for some more gaming action.

I am omnipresent
Radeon 7000 = Radeon VE.
The 7500 DDR is only 7x00 model that can clearly best all the earlier "Radeon"-type cards/

I saw that it had VE listed, but I thought the 7000 had a better core over the 64DDR?

aren't the radeon7000 cards (and original radeons) comparable with the geforce256... and basically just directX7 parts....

since the game requires DX 8.0 it'd be smart to get a DX8 card... say the ATi 9100 or geforce2MX/4MX.

Since when do the GeFarce 2MX and 4MX support directX 8.0 features? Both are DX7 and nothing above.

Radeon 8500/9000/9100 and GeFarce 4 not-MX are DirectX 8 compliant.

Oh, and nVidia makes the claim here in a pdf file that API support is "Complete DirectX support, including DirectX 8.1" on page two, right (third) column.

you're right... Nvidia didn't implement full DX8 (8.0) support until geforce3. sorry for my mistake.
