[Mercutio]

I met Fushigi today. Not very many members of this forum have actually met, to my knowledge, so I'm counting this as something of general interest. There's still a bit of cognitive dissonance between the name "Fushigi" and the man himself (see the "What We Look Like" thread) but I had no trouble recognizing him.

We met in the hard drive section of a CompUSA, and spent the next three hours goofing around the store (the ultimate surge protector has been found, and there was pretty much a running commentary of its other wares) and its parking lot.

I had a good time and really got a kick out of meeting one of the folks I've been talking to for years.

We need to have a general meeting sometime. That's all there is to it. Anyone have any ideas for a time/place?

Cliptin and I met Groltz in Seattle, and it was a very enjoyable experience. We all chatted like we had known each other for years (well, Cliptin and I HAVE known each other for years, but you know what I mean).

It would be big fun if we could all get together at some point, although given our multi-national group it may present a bit of a problem finding a common meeting place. Who knows, maybe it can happen. Nassau sounds good to me this time of year

Perfect...I can do a very good (if exaggerated) impersonation of Arnie. I used to keep my co-workers in stitches with it. Especially when I would do it over the hangar PA system.

My wife has a friend in Chicago that we visit occasionally....perhaps the next time we go there I could give a heads-up in here beforehand....

Well...I'm off work from December 10th until Jan. 6th. As some of you know, however, I'm married and tend to travel with my wife.

My wife has a friend in Chicago that we visit occasionally....perhaps the next time we go there I could give a heads-up in here beforehand....

I could probably host a Chicagoland get-together, although not in the next few weeks. Maybe in spring or summer. There's plenty of room & spare beds for anyone who needs to stay overnight. We do have a dog & cat, so those with allergies beware.

I had a great time chatting in person with Mercutio. We talked about everything from SR to SF to some of the silliness in CompUSA to personal stuff. As with many of my friends, we wound up saying 'well, we should get going', chatting for a few more minutes, then saying 'well, we should get going', chatting for a few more minutes, etc. Despite having only known him in the wired world, it felt like we had known each other in the 'real world' for years.

It might be a good idea to check the news to see if the MTA is on strike. The deadline passed at midnight today but if the talks break down we could still see a strike. A transit strike will make getting around NYC that much harder. Driving around the city, especially in Manhattan, isn't a good idea even in the best of times. It'll positively be a nightmare if there's a strike. For example, they'll only be letting cars with four or more occupants into the city during rush hours. Walking and biking are probably the best bet if there's a strike. Metro North, Amtrak, and the LIRR will also still be running if any of those are convenient for you, although they don't provide much in the way of borough to borough transportation.

You must have a thin skin. How could you possibly be cold with all that fur? I was doing some gardening last week with just a light jacket when it was a bit over 0° C. I was even perspiring a bit when the digging got tough. I start to feel cold around 0° C if I'm not moving around too much. If I'm walking briskly, I'm fine down to about -15° C with about 4 layers(undershirt, sweater, windbreaker, thermal sweatshirt). I"d like to try -40 or so just to see how long I could tolerate it, but it never even gets near that in NYC. I think the record was -12°F.

I like the idea of a group meeting, but since we're from all parts of the world and have different vacation days the logistics would be a nightmare. Also, some of us are either students or broke and just don't have the money for long distance travel, or in some cases the time. I've been wanting to travel a bit, but not now. Since I won't fly, I'll have to go by either rail or rent a cabin on a freighter if I'm going overseas. When I have a few months to kill I'll seriously consider doing it but now's not a good time. I've always wanted to tour the Far East, but I plan to do this when I have a suitable traveling companion, and can spend a year or so doing it, with a month or two in each country. The idea of hopping on a plane and rushing through everything in a week is not very appealing to me, and won't do the places any justice.

I don't know who that gent in the top picture is <heh> but the one in the lower picture certainly looks like the one I sat and broke bread with.

I'm not sure what Cliptin has in mind for me to say in regards of photo appearance-to-personality parallelism. Since he proved to be a very good person, I would like to defend the lower picture by vouching that he does eat with a knife and fork, not by snapping at small flying creatures. :wink:

Ah, but he was on his best behavior I've seen Cliptin eat cold beans out of a can with his fingers, drink packets of ketchup, and mix hot chocolate in with oatmeal to thicken it up. Yes, Cliptin has many, many sides Sorry, Cliptin, just had to set the record straight. And, also for the record, I am guilty of similar crimes, although I do have good table manners (I think)

Well, I thought the one of you in the suit with short hair was an imposter, but the other one is certainly you. As to whether your personality matches your looks, that's difficult to say. Generally, once I've spent any time with a person, I say their personality matches their looks because I get used to a person looking the way they do acting like they do. I know that's circular reasoning, but it's true. There are indeed some people that their look entirely different than they really are, but that's another story entirely. As for myself, someone once told me back in junior high that I'm a lot smarter than I look. I guess they meant I didn't have the stereotypical "smart" person look. I took it as a compliment. I think the reverse would be difficult though-namely a person that "looks" smart and turns out to be as dumb as a post.
