I have a GA P35C DS3R motherboard. For the last day or so whenever I start the computer or restart the computer, the video from the BIOS is extreamly dim. Sometimes it comes on at full brightness but then dims to the point you can't see anything the BIOS is doing.
Once Windows loads the video is fine.

Motherboard dying?

Good pickup, I assumed without looking that it had onboard video.

Try another monitor (and cable), then change the graphics card.

This thread's flow doesn't make sense. Missing posts?

I am not aware that windows/hardware can control that wide a range of brightness. My memory is a much narrower range and then off. But the troubleshooting is the same.

"Once Windows loads the video is fine" from the first post.

To me this says the video drivers in the BIOS are the problem.

Yes it's an add-in video card; Nvidia GT460.

Bozo, surely you're old enough to remember that graphics cards also have text modes? The motherboard BIOS just sends a stream of characters with attributes.

Your problem could even lie with the monitor (different modes again), but I think most of us are prepared to lay money on the GT460.

Problem solved: My monitor has an automatic brightness adjustment setting in it. Seems it thought the text mode portion of booting up was too bright and dimmed it. I disabled auto bright.
