I watched Idiocracy and Fast Food Nation last weekend.

Both movies were good and thought provoking.

I would suggest "Thank You for Smoking." And, if you haven't seen it, "Supersize Me."

And "Control Room", which you can watch for free on Google Video.
And "Jesus Camp", which you can find through alluc.org.

Control room was interesting as additional information and an alternative perspective.

But even the information about war that make it into the American news is filled with inaccuracies and is often old by the time it is broadcast.

I'm not really interested in seeing Super Size me. From the preview, it always came across as a PR stunt as this review describes. Besides, I don't eat fast food.

That guy probably thought that "Roger and Me" was also a publicity stunt....

The reason I thought Supersize Me was a publicity stunt was because I'm the counter-point. I ate fast food 2-3 times a day for at least 3 years without issue. If I did eat somewhere else, it was Pizza or Burgers. No weight gain, no heart-attack, nothing. I still eat fast food at least once a day, sometimes twice (time constraints).

So, more BS.

I'm under the impression that Morgan Spurlock's Supersize Me was/is heavily biased, just from his initial disclosure that his girlfriend is a vegan chef.

vegan chef...there's a contradiction in terms.

Not to me, the skill needed to artfully create quality food, when you limit the ingrediants to eliminate anything that tases good, is far higher than a normal chef that starts out with tasty ingrediants like a quality piece of beef...

I've had very good vegan food a time or two, but I really do wonder what is wrong with a person who doesn't partake of a good rare steak every now and then.

I think that just about explains it... I'm sure that you've never had beef from a cow, as 99.999% of beef sold in the United States comes from steers. If you had something from a cow, it was probably a downer, and you probably don't want to eat that stuff.

Bovine-schmovine ;) The only stuff I've actually gotten significant weight-loss from was Yak. The carcass had been hanging on a hook outside the hut for at least a month (not cured) before I boiled some of it and had a go; then I had to go for about 2 days. Those crazy tibetans must have incredible stomachs.

I watched Jesus Camp last night. It really angered me.

The hypocrisy displayed by these fundamentalists is amazing. They say that Muslim children are indoctrinated at a young age, but what they are doing is teaching their children, not indoctrinating/brainwashing them. Becky Fischer, the preacher, also goes so far as to say that they are not political, when a few minutes before (in the film) she has a cardboard cutout of George W. Bush on stage with her and she is praying for him, and they also have their kids protesting abortion in front of the White House.

As I said in "Something Random", I'd consider Jesus Camp a horror movie. The little kid who was talking about growing up to become an evangelical minister needs to be taken away from his parents and placed in protective custody.

Sure, when your preparing beef you start with a steer... But when your making beef you start, as ddrueding pointed out, with a cow...

That's making cattle.

It isn't beef until they shoot the steel rod into its head.

Ahh yes... I must have just missed all the news coverage of the "fundamentalist" children killing people in suicide bombings so they can get their virgins in heaven. Clearly the fundamentalist children who want to "save" people are more dangerous than young terrorists who want to kill all the western infidels.

If you brainwash a kid and they blow up another kid, that is indeed a shame. If you instead brainwash the kid into brainwashing other kids, that is an epidemic.

Terrorism is not here, but religious extremism is.

They certainly deserve a little more publicity than they're getting right now. Last I heard governments (and perhaps more importantly the media) have not declared war on fundamentalist Christian bullshit so there is a level of hypocrisy there that needs addressing...

Besides Muslim terrorists may be more active than, say, Christian dominionists but that doesn't necessarily make them any more dangerous in the long run... There are plenty of fruit-cakes on both sides of the argument and there are clearly still more baking... (I possibly stretched that analogy a bit too far but you probably get the idea)

I bet if you gave the Shrub-worshiping Evangelical tykes in "Jesus Camp" AK-47s and IEDs, and pointed them in the direction of a building full of atheists, gays and abortionists, you'd see something very similar to the actions of a Muslim extremist.

Oh my Merc, do you mean to say you'd think there is something wrong with PETA babe Alicia Silverstone? You'd not want to eat all of her veggy goodness ;). Not sure how much PS'in they did on this shot for the cover of Shape, but she's looking might fine/toned to me. Supposedly a good vegan diet & trampoline gave her these abs? Hmm, now think of 'exercise' like that, I wouldn't mind getting some firmer abs, amongst other things, with her 'trampolining' on me, lol...what an exhausting 'workout' she could give me:eek:wneddnce:. Lots of vegetarian restaurants in LA area, so many Indian places, veggy Islamic Chinese restaurants too (terrorist veggies?).

She sure does look funny with the makeup in the pix at this site though:

Sure you can have a really healthy vegan diet. But you can have an equally healthy balanced diet including a nice steak every once in a while (or several times a week if you can afford it).

Personally I think it's probably a lot more effort to have a healthy vegan diet than it is to have a healthy normal diet. Although I'm willing to admit that probably more vegans actually put in the effort.

You mean other than her affiliation with PETA and pretty much all her movies right?

You carnivores are bizarre. You think one can't be healthy and strong, let alone survive, without meat.

Coug, for a guy with a supposedly awful temper, your sense of humor is impeccable.

Oh please, don't post pictures of lightly clothed women ; we'll lose Howell for another six months.

Even if Coug was joking, I visit this forum from work and I would not like my boss to walk up behind me with that picture on the screen. If you want to post a picture of that nature, just link to it.

Your boss is ok with you "wasting" time online surfing this forum, but if there happens to be a woman in a swimsuit on the screen you'll get in trouble?

How about if I eat lunch at my desk and I surf the forum during my lunch hour? How about if my application is building, which takes about 4-5 minutes, and I want to quickly read a couple posts. I don't think my boss would give a shit.

I am a salary employee, as long as I get my work done, he won't care about a little web surfing.
