Crouching Tiger, Hero and House of Flying Daggers are all high on my list of most spectacularly beautiful movies. Actually I really like Crouching Tiger's soundtrack, also. Kind of surprising since I'm not a fan of most Asian entertainment idioms.

Somewhere in Time is a touching movie. One of my mom's favorites.

Mostly I've been watching documentaries lately.

Tonight's selection from my DVD jukebox was "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert", which stars Terrence ("Kneel before Zod!") Stamp and Hugo (Elrond, Agent Smith) Weaving as Australian drag queens.

I'd never bothered to watch it, but it is highly amusing.

paugie, you should check out the 6 hour Sci-fi Channel mini-series of Dune. It is the only version I've seen. William Hurt is great.

Saw a Jet Li movie (somewhat like Crouching Tiger) a few days ago on TV. Unfortunately it had started and I have no idea what the movie's name is. Was pretty good. It ends with him being poisoned in an arranged fight, and his Japanese opponent declares jet to be the winner, but Jet dies shortly after.
It was Fearless.

So would you like to explain what you mean by "idioms" in relation to Asian entertainment, your useage eludes my comphrension? (oh, I get it, you're not a fan of J-pr0n :D )?

Have you seen the movie drama/comedy "Shower"...old-fashioned, traditional concepts of honor and family, Western morals/idealism almost non-existent in todays Asian-American communites or any other Westernised cultures...too bad, and virtually no sex or violence in the well written script---intellectualfood for the brain? Maybe you just don't like subtitled movies then, if they are Asian, and are not *fast paced* and computer game orientated in their imagery?

I don't consider any of the above 'action' orientated movies of any interest to me, especially with the desensitized, glorified, escapest violence.

Or maybe Merc, you can get 'into' Asian 'idioms' (culture???) if its an academy award winning film by a non-Asian director? One of the best soundtrack theme songs ever, fully an orchestral piece I would think appeals to Merc? "The Last Emperor" (supposedly the quality/lighting of extended directors cut DVD transfer sucks compared to the VHS release). Cinematography in The Last Emperor is vastly superior iCandy---wish they would do a proper Hi-Def 4k res, transfer of that movie so I could watch it on a proper 4k res, large screen projector or LCD--- to gimmics FX in those martial arts orientated 'popular' movies for teenagers.

And if you really need to see an Ang Lee movie, then perhaps the new NC17 rated "Lust, Caution" (I have yet to see Brokeback Mountain, and probabaly never will, as the soundtrack for that movie irritates me everytime I hear it being played), Graphic sex and brutal violence, there you go Merc, you're kind of movie :)

While it came out before CTHD, I think a terrific parody of CTHD, could be seen (well I guess it's a parody of silly FX in all martial arts movies) in the Category III Hong Kong "classic" Erotic Chinese Ghost Story

talk about martial arts action, lol It was so silly, I was LMAO. Yeah, if you have a really warped sense of humor, this movie is silly-great or great-silly, just hilariously bad (in a sarcastic way) perverse kinky slapstick comedy :D. two thumbs up, way up (I think Ebert reviewed it???)

Oops, maybe wrong link above, I think the one I rented on VHS was the original from 1987:
Liao zhai yan tan

Here's a review :p ; damn I don't know if I saw the sequel or the original...actually one of these is probably enough, lol. Kind of Roger Coreman of HK style horror/comedy NC17 style (probably could get away with an R rating by today's standards)

I hope I can urge people to see this movie. It's not a porno movie but it does boast hot simulated sex with gorgeous women. If you have seen this movie on the new DVD or the old video then do yourself a favor see ERotic Ghost Story 2! Part two is quite a show. It has better hotter sex and Outrageous action scenes that only Hong Kong films can offer. The Photography is great and the kinkiness is right on. Eye candy gone mad.

Huh? That is very difficult to follow and the ultimate point is unclear. For the sake of clarity, have you considered using less than 10 different concepts in one post? ;)

I don't know where I got the idea of watching "Spirited Away" but I did and really enjoyed it.

Also I got to watch "Letters from Iwo Jima" and I think it is a great movie. Many liked "Flags of our Fathers" but IMO, this one surpasses it by a lot.

Here's a list of other movies by the director, Hayao Miyazaki. If you like the environmentalist theme I'd recommend some of the more recent movies like Howl's Moving Castle (well, Howl is more anti-war than anything else) and Princess Mononoke. Movies from before Mononoke don't really have as much of a social commentary angle. On your Mark is actually a music video; very nicely done.

My daughter (she's 11.5 now) is a Miyazaki freak; so much so that she wants to move to Japan when she grows up ;-). I've bought her several of his movies on DVD for her. She always make me sit and watch it with her the first time around, so I've seen all the DVDs we have, and have enjoyed them as well.

I watched Superbad and Knocked Up in the last two weeks and thought they were both somewhat decent, but both had some major problems.

Both movies were way too long for comedies. I think a good time to shoot for is 90 minutes for a comedy. There were scenes in both movies that were completely pointless and could have been shortened or cut entirely.

I also thought that women in Knocked Up were portrayed as crazy. Now, you might say that this made the movie funnier, but I would disagree.

SPOILER
For instance, when Debbie finds that Pete is not cheating on her, rather he is playing fantasy baseball, she says it is worse than if he was cheating on her and kicks him out the house. I don't think this would ever happen in real life. The joke was already done by this point, it wasn't funny when she kicked him out of the house. How does this add to the point of the movie (being funny)?

I think the only reason that the writers added this was to give Pete and Ben a reason to go to Vegas, which was also a completely unnecessary/unfunny scene.

There was no point in Superbad that I felt was not worth watching. It was painful at times, but painful in a way that I could 100% identify with. Most of the people I know who did not like Superbad are people I suspect didn't have major teenage awkwardness issues.

Was able to watch "Stardust" the other week. True to recommendation, it was a delight. Especially Robert de Niro. One thing which I found discomfitting, the sword play between Septimus (dead) and the Tristan. I didn't like it. Maybe they could have thought of some other way of conflict. Too cute for me, that part.

My 2nd daughter gave us passes to a movie house. So my wife and I watched "Enchanted". I was nodding already through the animated portion. It's good they entered reality before I could really sleep.

Entertaining enough but as they told me after we got home, "you should have watched 'Golden Compass' instead", I could probably agree. But there were no more movie passes to be availed of.
