A 1972 BMW 2500 E3 saloon. Amazingly enough, no rust at all, and 37K on the clock. 1 careful owner from new, just spent £1250 on it before selling it on.

At last, have the car I have always been after....

Congratulations. Quite a find, looks to be in excellent condition. A friend picked up an 3.0S from the same time period, it was a surprisingly nice ride considering the age.

'I thought this thread would actually be about people....'

Old cars are a bit like old people,

- whine if they are pushed too hard
- bits fall off of them occasionally
- do things in their own time
- smell funny on hot days

I could go on.... But I can forgive all these things, 'cos I have a terrible weakness for old German cars, esp Beemers.

They require special fuels and spew a lot of pollution?

Yes indeed, 97 RON petrol, used to be called '5 star' petrol in the old days + a lead substitute additive.

It works out at about £1.20 a litre......

All worth it though. I am intending to show it this summer once I have had the front wheels balanced. (it vibrates so hard past 55mph, your fillings fall out!).
