Eye candy for your keyboard

Connected via a USB 2.0 cable, each key has a 17x17 pixels liquid crystal display (LCD) to show the character according to the language used in the operating system.

When the layout map is changed, the image on each key changes accordingly. The company said the image could be any alphabetic letter, mathematic symbol, punctuation or musical notation--or any graphic symbol or glyph.

Cool, although I doubt that LCDs are a good choice here.

From the same article:

"The designers said the keyboard will be operating system independent and use organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology to give it a soft glow."

So are they using single color OLEDs as a backlight for LCDs??

No. The article listed two different products from two different outfits. One uses LCDs, the other uses OLED.

My main concern would be the lifetime of the flex cable connecting the key's display. I highly doubt that it will last for millions of keystrokes. Other than that, and probably the cost, it's a nice idea.

My biggest concern would be the power consumption of a wireless version. We'd need to use rechargable batteries to keep it practical.
