I'm not very familiar with DVD writers. A potential customer wants one in his box. And he wants one with a black face plate. My options are quite limited. I've found an older Pioneer 4x model, a Sony drive (Mercutio's horror story discouraged me regarding S*ny) and the 8x NEC ND-2500B.

Is the NEC 8x DVD-writer just fine or is it suspected of being a P.O.S? My past experiences with NEC drives have been mixed, so I'm a little worried.

I'm interested too. The NEC is about the only other drive available here that I'd consider in the DVD-RW segment.

A supplier who moves a fair number of Sony, Pioneer and NEC drives claimed that they had very few NEC come back (unlike Sony BTW), but I don't trust salespeople.

Clearly, the Pioneer is what everyone wants, and equally have got buggerall chance of getting. :(

There's always Plextor. They make some black models, they're a little pricey though.
The warrenty service is slow and ackward, but they did make good on the warrenty.
