The old wireless router does not work with the newer devices (phone, tablet, kindle) so i'm looking for something new. I tried a cheapo F-D link but it locked up after two days. :( The range was limited too. What can I get for 100-125 that is reliable and has a strong signal? (It must reach from upstairs to a downstairs room ~30-40ft offset.) Thanks.

A full new router or just a wireless access point? The most cost effective solution would be to leave your current router running as-is, possibly disabling the wireless, and put in a dedicated AP. This one is my favorite, and I guarantee it is more powerful, capable, and cheaper than a new all-in-one router.

Yup. You plug it into your router/hub/switch like another computer. You then connect to it and configure it using some software that goes on your computer. The cool part is that if you really want good coverage you can install more than one of them in different parts of your house and configure them to act as a single seamless wireless system. The downside is that you need a CAT5 to every location where there is a transmitter.

I hate, psychotically HATE the term "wifi" and the people who decided that should be a thing should be thrown in the same deep hole lined with razor blades as Western Digital.

Anyway, yeah, get an Access Point. I like TrendNet. They're inexpensive and they tend to release incrementally faster products quickly. And they work well with iCraps.

Have you any particular one in mind? Some of the reviews are not good.
