Network performance

Is there really a meaningful difference in actual *network* performance?

The only real difference appears to be CPU utilization, which is a function of the drivers, not the hardware.

After trying different GIGe solutions, the answer is simply yes. Some cards/integrated solutions manage 200Mb/s, while other manage 800Mb/s.
That's why I'm asking this question, I've tried a few of the 200Mb/s ones...:)

I'd be interesting in seeing a list of those that fall into each of those categories. I can't see any correct hardware implementation being incapable of reasonable throughput.

Here's some netperf numbers from my P4C800-E:

TCP STREAM TEST to 192.168.2.3
Recv Send Send
Socket Socket Message Elapsed
Size Size Size Time Throughput
bytes bytes bytes secs. 10^6bits/sec

8192 16384 16384 10.00 795.34

While my A7N8X-X with a Intel1000MT manages about 300Mb/s.

My A7v600 with integrated gigabit nic manages this:
TCP STREAM TEST to 192.168.2.3
Recv Send Send
Socket Socket Message Elapsed
Size Size Size Time Throughput
bytes bytes bytes secs. 10^6bits/sec

8192 16384 16384 10.00 341.47

This is all through a SMC 8508T switch.

Intel CSA is from what I've read about the best available, even though the Nforce 250GB and K8T800pro have their own solutions.

Sorry if I wasn't clear :).

I was trying to give some numerical data from my environment about the capabilities of the different NIC's.
Intel CSA: 795Mb/s (Linux)
Intel 1000MT 32bit PCI NIC in a A7N8X: 300Mb/s (WinXP)
A7V600 Integrated NIC: 340Mb/s (Linux).

In theory many are GIGe, in practise some aren't much better than a Fast Ethernet NIC :(.
