Hi Guys,

Elin and I are pleased to announce the safe arrival of our daughter Gabriel at 9:26pm, 15 Jan 2010. She was bright eyed and looking around the room the moment she was born.

Wt 3.09kg (6lb 13oz) and 51cm long.

Mum and baby are doing great, and Isaac is intrigued with his new baby sister.

Congratulations, Chewy! I am disappointed that you did not name her Zoltan, but I guess Gabriel is also a name that can be chosen.

Gabriel is almost always a boys name. It looks like it was a fringe girl's name in the US for several years (just inside the top 1000), but faded after the turn of the century.

Apparently, there are 20825 Gabrielle, 6125 Gabriele, 2450 Gabriella and 22050 Gabriela females in the US (total 51450), but only 3675 named Gabriel. In contrast, there are 89425 males.

I believe it's even less common in Australia, where Gabriella is currently fashionable (presumably from teen singing star Gabriella Cilmi), along with Gabrielle. Gabriel is just inside the top 100 boy's names.

The nemesis in Heroes was Gabriel Gray, who took the nickname of Sylar.

Hopefully your daughter will have a somewhat better disposition. Here's luck!

Congratulations, too!
Glad you have one of each. You must be dancing around with gladness. If not, you should be.
Do you sing? Sing to the kids.

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes.

She is now home, and is really quiet compared to how Isaac was. It's taking some time to get used to.

As for the name, yes, typically in Australia 'Gabriel' is the masculine spelling, while 'Gabrielle' is the feminine form. But we decided to stay with the original Hebrew convention rather than the English/French convention, and in Hebrew 'Gabriel' is for both male/female. (My wife is Danish, and the Danes tend to stick with the Hebrew forms, rather than the English/French forms, but even that is changing in this day and age). Also her middle name is Maria, after my grandmother.
