AMD has released the 148, 248 and 848 Opterons which run at 2.2 GHz. The AMD Opteron processor Model 848 will be priced at $3199, the 248 is priced at $913 and the AMD Opteron processor Model 148 will be priced at $733 in 1,000-unit quantities.

The 848 and 148 will be available in December, the 248 is available immediately. The new Opterons all work with (dual Channel) registered PC3200 memory, and the 246s will also use registered DDR400 in the coming months.
Ok, it's not that big of a news, but I had nothing else to do this morning.

Ace's Hardware also tested the performances of Apache 1.3.26 in both 32bit and 64bit modes and the latter shows a nice boost. Especially with the speed bump announced today, AMD's Opteron is looking more and more like THE CPU for server boxes over Intel's Xeon.

I'm not much of a server person, but I wonder how price/performance compares between Opterons and Xeons.

Doesn't look like AMD have dropped the prices of the lesser speed 64bit CPUs. Nice that they work fine with DDR400.

Also good news re: the alliance with Sun, giving 4-way capabilities. And Solaris on AMD64, yummy.
