Official press release
WHAT'S NEWS
  • New default theme
    Mozilla Firebird 0.6 sports a crisp, fresh and attractive theme, based on the amazing Qute theme by Arvid Axelsson. Also, the new theme has icons for the Bookmark Manager toolbar.

    Redesigned Preferences window
    The new Options window puts the most often used preferences into seven convenient panels, each with a descriptive icon selector.

    Improved Privacy Options
    With a single click (and a confirmation) you can clear all privacy data including form data, history, cache, cookies, etc.

    Improved Bookmarks
    Among other bookmark enhancements, the Bookmarks menu now features a context menu. Try it by right-clicking on a bookmark in the menu.

    Talkback enabled
    You are now able to submit Talkback information when Mozilla Firebird crashes, which makes it much easier for developers to fix critical bugs. For more information read about Talkback in the FAQ.

    Automatic Image Resizing
    With this feature, Mozilla Firebird shrinks any image that is bigger than the window to make the whole image visible. When this is done, the cursor over the image changes to tell you that if you click, the image is restored to full size. Instructions on how to disable this feature can be found here.

    Smooth Scrolling
    Instructions on how to disable this feature can be found here.

    Access to more preferences
    You are now able to edit lots of advanced preferences that are not exposed in the Options window by entering about:config in the location bar and press Enter.

    Profile Chrome
    You can now install Mozilla Firebird extensions in your own profile folder instead of in the actual program folder. This means that you will be able to upgrade to new versions of Mozilla Firebird without losing all your extensions. Note that it's up to the extension authors to allow their extensions to use this functionality. Some extensions may not offer this as an option yet.

    Mac OS X
    Mozilla Firebird is available for Mac OS X. It's still quite rough around the edges but it's a start.

    Lots of bug fixes
    There have been too many bug fixes since Phoenix 0.5 to keep track of them all. It's better. Trust us ;-)

Only 4-5 months late.

Known Issues:

Menus, and folders on the bookmark toolbar do not always collapse correctly for Mozilla Firebird users on Windows.

The "Don't ask at startup" checkbox in the Profile Manager is not working.

"Use this theme" checkbox in theme install doesn't function properly and you may have to switch themes by going to Tools > Options > Themes. Also, some themes will not completely switch without a restart.

Form auto-complete is still an unstable feature and may lead to crashes.

Disabling of form auto-completion is not working.

So a person is forced to have this browser grab and store every login name and password it sees???

Not passwords, only things like login name and unencrypted filling text.

Besides, among the new features of Opera 7.11 ...
* FastForward and Rewind
* Take Web Notes as you browse
* View photos in Slideshow
* Cookie manager
* Built-in search
* Mouse gestures
* Keyboard shortcuts
* Wand password manager
With Firebird, the auto-completion info is easily cleaned in the "privacy" section of the Options menu. I haven't checked if the same applies to Opera. I'm more familiar with the way Firebird handles informations though, so I feel I'm more in control with it than with any other browser.

"Web Notes" is a function that lets you manually create small text notes that are kept in the hotlist by either copy/pasting or typing to the Notes panel. It's not for grabbing user names or passwords.

The Opera equivalent of a login/password manager is the "Wand" function. There is also a separate auto-complete function. Both can be completely disabled in the Preferences menus.

OMG, is there any way to disable the crappy smooth scrolling?

"smooth" scrolling has to be the worst invention ever. Seriously, who wants to intentionally slow down their scrolling?

Type about:config in the address bar, and go down to general.smoothScroll. Change the value from true to false. You can change all sorts of hidden settings from there.

I am omnipresent
Mozilla's mail client is still worthwhile.
Phoenix does seem to have a bit more browsing area, but the current build has a little bug with autosaving form data that makes me more than a little uncomfortable.
