From IBM press release :
The new IBM PowerPC 970 is the heart of the PowerPC Blade. It is based on the 64-Bit Power 4 architecture which is also used in the processors of the IBM eServer pSeries. The 64-bit microprozessor

· Offers full symmetrical multi-processing
· Has a high reliability (with parity L1, ECC L2 and parity checked system bus)
· Is manufactured in the latest 0,13 micrometer Copper/SOI CMOS technology
· Runs at frequences ranging from 1.8 GHz - 2.5 Ghz

Therefore the IBMPowerPC 970 is the fastest PowerPC so far.

Further technical highlights of the PowerPC 970:

· Onchip 512 KB L2 Cache
· Altivec ™ Vector/SIMD unit
· 6,4 GB/s I/O system bus throughput
And as written by Hannibal at Ars Technica :
If Apple were to release a 2.5GHz PPC 970-based PowerMac in the second half of this year, this would enable them to put up a respectable showing against x86- or x86-64-based systems from Intel and AMD. Depending on what kind of memory the 970 is coupled with, the state of the promised 900MHz system bus, etc., this could make for a very nice crop of *NIX workstations and servers from both Apple and IBM.
Armed with such a beast, I would be a lot more tempted to try a Mac and their OS-X operating system than ever before. How well do you think this thing would fare at F@h?

However, knowing the ripoff prices that Apple usually ask for its top-end products, I wouldn't be surprised at all if a 2.5GHz PPC 970-based PowerMac would be priced at over 4000$, if not 5000$.
