It's kinda stupid to say that the programs have issues with SP2, when they'd clash with any firewall...

Not quite, they wouldn't clash with ANY firewall, just SP2 firewall. Atleast the few I tried.
Hmm... Has MS changed that list? I checked it yesterday, and it had over 200 entries (as said in The Register's news above). Games like UT and UT2004. Now the list seems to be revised. All the programs listed today seem to have real problems. BSOD loops are not nice... :-?

Cheers,

Jan

Windows XP SP2 Issue with AMD64 Systems

Windows XP SP2 Issue with AMD64 Systems

Microsoft Knowledgebase Article: 878474

SYMPTOMS
After you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), your computer repeatedly restarts. You do not receive an error message.
CAUSE
This issue occurs if all the following conditions are true:

* You install the 32-bit version of Windows XP SP2 on a computer that has an AMD 64-bit processor.
* You configure your computer to enforce data execution prevention (DEP). DEP is also known as no-execute protection.
* You installed hardware that requires the Mpegport.sys driver.

When you restart your computer after you install Windows XP SP2, the Mpegport.sys driver tries to write data to a memory location that is monitored by DEP. This behavior causes the computer to restart.
RESOLUTION
You may be able to resolve this issue if you configure a DEP exception. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type Sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the Advanced tab under Performance, click Settings.
3. On the Data Execution Prevention tab, click Hardware and software DEP enabled for all programs except.
4. Click Add, type the path of the Mpegport.sys file on your hard disk, and then click OK two times.

WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, remove Windows XP SP2 from your computer. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Restart your computer.
2. Press the F8 key. On a computer that is configured to start to multiple operating systems, press F8 when the Startup menu appears.
3. Use the arrow keys to select a safe mode option, and then press ENTER.
4. Click Start, click Run, type Appwiz.cpl, and then click OK.
5. In the list of installed programs, click Windows XP Service Pack 2, and then click Remove.
6. Follow the instruction on the screen to remove Windows XP SP2 from your computer.

MORE INFORMATION
This issue is known to occur if the Sigma Designs Hollywood Plus DVD decoder is installed on your computer.

I am omnipresent
You actually have to work pretty hard to find and install the Sigma Designs DVD Decoder driver under XP.
In fact, I have students in my troubleshooting class install one under XP precisely because it IS so hard to find.

So I have to wonder how many computers are actually affected by that bug. I can't even imagine that it would be more than a few dozen people.

Correct. From what I have ready it's a problem with a poorly written driver and that is all. Not M$'s or AMD's fault.

I would expect that most of the people who come across this issue with their personal systems would not blame the DVD decoder, and instead claim that some other piece of hardware (like the hard drive) has failed.
