Has anyone used a Nexus Silent Power NX-3500?

I'm thinking of buying 2 and using them instead of my HEC 300W silent PS's.

Silentpcreview.com seems to think highly of them. And I'd go with the 350W instead of the 300W model because one would go into a Barton 3000 with 1GB , 18GB SCSI, 160GB, 80GB Samsung and Geforce 4200.
The other would go into a Barton 2800, 512MB, 3* 18GB SCSI, Geforce2.

Do you think the 300W would be enough?

I run a Palomino 2400 (2GHz) with 512MB RAM and 80GB ATA on a 200W PSU. AFAIK, your Barton 3000 (2.2GHz) actually uses less power.

So 300W should give you at least 100W to share between two drives and a GeForce 4200 (and some RAM, but who cares?).

SCSI drives tend to be less of a power problem than ATA, so that's another bonus (please don't ask why, I just read manufacturers' blurb).

In short, I'd bet largish sums of money that 300W is more than adequate - with a decent brand of PSU.

HEC makes a 385W PSU that's really, really nice for the money. I don't know how much they are in Finland, but they're $32 locally and $40 from newegg. It's nice and quiet, too.

Ah, just the words I wanted to hear time, as the 300W model was the preferred one over at silentpcreview. :)

Merc, can't get that model here. Which do you think is the most silent of the HEC 300-400W models?

Wow, this thing is (.....wait, gotta check......running? .....YES) quiet.

I'll get a Compucase 6a21 case today, migrate my raid to it, and then install my other Nexus to my winblows computer.

This one was really worth it. Those HEC ultra silents that I've had are pretty loud compared to this.

Happy camper...

I would estimate you'd need atleast a 400 watt PSU with 10 two platter hard drives in the system. There's always Antec's true power which should have adjustable fans... enermax has similar units.

I'm not up to date on the 400+ watt PSUs, just stick with a brand name or check out recomendations on SPCR if they have any in that range.

Well, if you are interested in a TRULY SILENT power supply, you could always go for the CoolMAX 480-watt (or 400-watt, 350-watt, or 300-watt model) power supply.

These have been around for a bit now. THEY DON'Y HAVE FANS.

Is $129 480 watts + no noise music to your ears???

Here's SilentPCReview's review about the Coolmax fanless PSU. Seems to run quite hot.

Cheers,

Hmm... Maybe I should use "of" instead of "about"... :-?

There's also an Antec fan-less power supply -- that has yet to rear its head. (It should have already been available by now!)

This upcoming Antec fan-less power supply actually is not fan-less, per se, but instead has a fan that only kicks in if needed, which is supposed to *rarely* happen under normal ambient room temperature conditions (of which one would assume to be under 30°C).

And, I believe Antec will also have an SSI "fan-less" model with a 24-pin main power connector and the requisite 8-pin and 4-pin auxiliary power connectors, so that you can power your Xeon and Opteron mobos in silence. The CoolMAX comes with a common 20-pin main power connector -- the ones used on P-4 and Athlon mobos.

I hope the Antec fan-less PS is better than the others out there now. I understand they aren't that much to have under a heavy load (overheating, shuttding down...).

My neighbours system runs a FSP 300W PSU with 8 hard drives, 3 opticals, a 2940U2W, P4 2.4, 512mb, and Radeon 9200. Works fine but the cabling is a nightmare.

I never understood the point of a fanless PSU. There is going to have to be a fan somewhere in the system anyway to extract heat from the case. With the newer 120mm fan PSUs available, I don't see the point in getting rid of it as it can cool the case & PSU reasonably well without much noise.

Taking the fan out means you'd have to put one somewhere else to ventilate the case.
