Businesslights.com botched my order and shipped 830s instead, and they just arrived today. We'll see how well they can make it right.

Just be cautious with any type of general lighting replacement using 5mm LEDs. I'm currently in the process of test screw-in LED lamps for someone. The ones using 5mm LEDs took around 300 hours to degrade to 70% brightness. Power LEDs on the other hand last much longer. There's one in my workroom which has been going since late January 2004 (roughly 50,400 hours so far) . It's still at least 75% of initial brightness.

This document from Cree on lumen maintenance is an interesting read.

A 25-pack of the correct bulbs arrived today. They never got back to me, nor requested the old bulbs back, just shipped me the right ones.

They are 6000K, which is quite a shock compared to the 3500K standard in my office, but things are easier to see and read. Unfortunatly, the CRI (or whatever it should be called) isn't as good as I would like. The best example I can see is a white paper with black text on a grey desk, the text seems to pop off the page, or shift around a little bit. Almost like an optical illusion. Combined with the dark grey outside (serious storm), it is difficult to judge.

I guess they figure the costs of shipping the other tubes back, combined with the chance of damage in transit, probably makes it not worth their while. I'll guess that their costs for a 25-pack of 830 tubes are less than the return shipping costs.

Maybe not as good as you might like but is it a good deal better than whatever is being used in the office right now?

It is better than the rest of the office. The most remarkable thing about it is the lack of glare on my computer monitor, possibly because the color temps are about the same?

General purpose lighting, but some utility capabilities would be nice. I'll be doing work at night and in attics and crawlspaces, so the ability to illuminate an area would be nice. Something I can keep in my small work bag for when I need it. I'm thinking of a pair of these.

all depends on how bright you need it, how narrow/throw or wide/flood light you need. Also how uniform you want the beam to be. If U have plenty of time to wait (dd <:rotfl: ), jtr might be able to build U a custom light for pretty cheap.

I'm having jtr build me a brighter version of a 3AAA w/glass 'zoom' lens < kewl tech, for uniform brightness. Most of the other LED flashlights have very bright hot spots with rapidly weakening light towards the outer edge of the beam...I hate those.

Do *not* buy anything from that damn Chinese-American d**K, David Chow (Fenix) lights. The guy is a 1st class turd and troll on CPF. Shortly b4 they banned me from the site, as well as basically forced away one of the most knowledgeable, tell it like it is, members to leave; the 4Sevens, guy was shilling his own threads, against the forum rules, bumping to the top more than daily, threads for batteries he was selling> that he bought through a company to resell on CPF, that's run by other Chinese peeps he's friends with, who do a lousy job of customer support---<basically none at all, they don't answer email, and sell inferior made batteries for lowest prices. 4Sevens trolled me when I asked him for a recommendation if he knew of any protection PCB's that would prevent damage/fire of the Li-ion batteries on his thread he was shilling for his own ego satisfaction/needs on CPF. He accused me of 'jackin' his thread and 'go start a new thread of your own if you want to talk about protection circuits', after I linked to the same Chinese owned retailer of crappy batteries/low prices. What does this d**k, do later just a month later someone else asks if he's going to offer a protection circuit for sale? He links them to the *exact* same PCB, at that same website that I asked/linked about, but he refused to acknowledge at that time!!! What a total d**k!

He also at the time, was to the objection of other CPF members who ordered from him, who were already Catholic; sending a brochure with every order that promoted his Christian zealot faith. Again, a *total* d**K.

If you don't mind the hassle of finding/using Li-Ion chargers and batteries, you can get longer run-times, maybe a little higher output with this version of the light:

^take a look at the flood beam shot, not 100% uniform, still brighter at the center, but pretty good uniformity.

jtr is also working on a single AA flood-to-zoom light for my mother (no pressure there jtr, b4 she dies maybe??? :p). I might get him to make me some if I like them:

What a surprise. You manage to have a problem with one of the most stand up people on CPF. Everyone else raves about the guy, and you're a whiner. He must have insulted Apple.

I'm still using the TK11, not having found anything better for the size/output/run time.

I just bought, uh, 11 strands/nets of LED Christmas lights. That supplements the strands from last year so we're probably 70% LED on our Xmas lights now.

Sorry, but that's about the limit of my contribution to mass adoption of LED lighting at the moment. :)

I got another LED just yesterday. So it is useless and obsolete now? :(

I've been lurking at CPF for years now, but will be starting a thread here about wiring a house explicitly for custom LED lighting. A little bit later...

They banned uda so they can't be all bad. :diablo:
Banning over there seems pretty arbitrary if you ask me. There are a few posters there who have crossed the lines multiple times, and yet they've never been banned. It seems once you're a benefactor you gain some sort of immunity from banning. Besides udaman, one of my friends was permanently banned over there, and he didn't do half the stuff some of the "benefactors" have done. I was even banned myself once for 3 days.

Some of the regulars there make uda appear downright sane.
Yep, I agree 100%. Udaman was banned mostly because he pissed off a few of the long-time members by challenging their long-held ( but not necessarily correct ) ideas. They called it trolling, just as they did when I received my 3-day ban. I've since learned not to get into a fight over there with certain people. Some people there are considered "gods", and you just can't challenge their ideas, however incorrect, without risking the consequences. Anyone remember Newbie? He was the absolute best contributor to knowledge over there, ever. He was more or less forced into "retirement" because he was independent, told it like it was based on his rigorous testing. This pissed off a few long-term advertisers, hence the banning masquerading as "retirement".

OK, now I understand more clearly. I did not think of the small business sellers that don't want to hear that their products have inefficient light output and spotty quality.

I've found that any site that requires support tends to have arbitrary moderation.

I was kicked from a site once for complaining to a moderator that I was "warned" for pointing out that someone was providing a derivative work and linking to the original. Turns out that the guy was a paid member and complained because he felt slighted by the comment.

That's certainly true. I got booted from some forum after pointing out their ATI / nVidia Blu-ray quality shootout was inherently flawed because the two cards were not level matched.

What do you use to charge 18650 cells? Mine are taking over 5 hours in WF-139 charger due to the low 450mA output.

Y not just have Xtra batteries pre-charged, so speed won't matter?

Charging too fast *could* be explosive or damage a Li-Ion, make sure you read up on them! Don't think charging a 18650 standard chemistry Li-Ion is a good idea above 2C, IIRC...even with protected cells, not sure the PCB works on charging, just discharge/shorts.

^the 2 on this page, made for RC packs, but not too expensive, built in AC adapter so no PC PS needed, will charge up to 5A...and you get the fun of using PC software w/them :D (no OS X versions :( )

Hmmm. That seems to have only one channel at 450mA which would be even slower for two cells if I understand correctly. The reviews are amusing. I'm not quite sure about the smuggling procedure. :D

Pros: 1 charges and 2 accumulators are simultaneous. An accumulator is inserted in it tightly. If 2 Cutting-in, to smuggle out of it is necessary chemto poddet'. Fork of the American standard. Assembling - does not cause censures. For two standards of 18650 or Cr123a

Cons: As on me that 450ma little!

Other Thoughts: 500 characters 500 characters 500 characters 500 characters 500 characters 500 characters 500 characters 500 characters 500 characters 500 characters500 characters500 characters

Bottomline: Good charge device at low price!

The only other charger I can find is the bulky, 2-part Pila IBC.

We received the TK11 R2. Color is a bit off - needs around green CC05 or so - but warmer overall. Output is even brighter than the original, partly due to the tighter beam. It has an OP reflector, yet the spill is not so smooth. I like the TK11 series in the size/weight class. My lumapower and o-light are not used much nowadays.
