I probably use my 4Sevens Quark AA^2 the most, but I have a love hate relationship with it. I like the beam pattern, shape, etc. But, most of the time the moonlight mode is too dim for what I'm trying to see, so I end up having to click twice to get to low mode which has enough light which is annoying.

It may be a good one, but I'm not a fan of the AAs anymore.

I'm thinking about buying one of these. Is 15 lumens enough for a nightlight in the tent after power is off? Unfortunately they are not sold in the US.

Can I ask why you need a lightlight? Night terrors?

I was sure that SureFire used to have this:

http://www.surefire.com/SC1-Spares-Carrier

But with a very low wattage incandescent bulb. For multiple days of survival lighting.

Perhaps something like this:

47 hours at 15 lumens, plus you know it's not going to crap out on you in a time of need. And/or 200 lumens for 2 hours to see the polar bear trying to gut you in full glory. More dollars but you get what you pay for with flashlights IMHO.

Not exactly, but I've been trapped in tents by lions, wildebeest and hippos. You never know what is out there and I don't like trying to move about in pure blackness. I want a general light so that I can find my TK11, etc.

I have enough focused LED flashlights. I was thinking that the Zebralight wider angle would be better for a large area and it could be aimed by rotation on the headband part.

Interesting info, although 4000 yen ( ~$40 US ) still might not be some people's idea of "low-priced" (although I think it's pretty reasonable for a screw-base LED lamp ). Also, nice to see that some LED screw-base lamps are exceeding CFL efficiency. Here's another lamp from Toshiba:

http://www.ledinside.com/Toshiba_20091001

93 lm/W in natural white, 69 lm/W in warm white. The natural white is roughly 50% more efficient than a CFL.

800 lm is for living in a cave. There should be brighter LED replacements for E26/27 lamps in loving rooms for example. That is not to mention how one replaces the 4 x F32T8 ceiling fixtures.

Cheaper and Brighter: Innovations in Thermal Radiation, Chip Architecture and More

The m-plane GaN substrate is a good choice for future generations, too. Engineers are working on a package for high emission efficiency and good color characteristics by combining the substrate with a near-ultraviolet LED and red, green and blue phosphors. Sample-shipment is scheduled to begin before the end of fiscal 2009, with volume production slated for 2011.
That sounds great...but

The development of m-plane GaN substrate LEDs is under way at other companies, universities, etc, as well, but problems with poor productivity and high cost have been cited. Mitsubishi Chemical uses a relatively low-cost liquid-phase growth technique. The firm's Kawana revealed they hope to cut manufacturing cost to the level of blue LED chips by about 2015.
The company currently uses a conventional LED package, with a combination of blue LED and yellow phosphors (Fig 7). The next step will be to apply the firm's expertise in phosphors to combine red and green phosphors with the blue LED, creating an LED package with outstanding color characteristics. This type of package generally suffers from low emission efficiency, but the company hopes to boost that to 100lm/W by 2010 by enhancing the phosphors.
^...will they ever get past 100lm/w & CRI 95, for a much lower price???

"With m-plane GaN it should be possible to roughly triple emission efficiency, which means 200lm/W to 300lm/W."
Alright jtr, when you get your hands on sample prototypes of these, I expect you to put them in my flashlights ASAP, how much longer do I have to wait for the 300lm/w version :D ?

It isn't. Only that such activities are found by many to be fun, and I'm sorry you're missing out.

 :) I did not mean to imply any personal involvement in the activities, and I thought it was odd that people think I'm involved in such business activities.

I had recently obtained a TV again around that time, having watched very little network TV over the previous decade.

I'm looking to buy LED Christmas Lights. Lots of them. I'm sure there is a significant gradient in quality and cost, but googling just shows page after page of yahoo and amazon stores. Can anyone here clue me in on what to look for? Where to get it cheap? I'll probably need to order about 128 strings in 3-5 colors each.

Thanks!

May I ask why?

Doing the whole musical christmas lights thing at the office for next year.

Isn't that a little early or late, depending on how you view the situation? :) Are there still good deals on 2009 holiday overstocks?

I'm hoping that I can have it ready in time for next year. The additional electrical work will need to be permitted, so it should start soon. Programing all the channels will be an absolute nightmare.

That is my hope. I won't be needing them for another 6-8 months, but they will be a significant chunk of my budget, and this is probably the time to buy.

Ugh...disregard. I really wanted to use LEDs for their fast on/off time, low power consumption, and general geekiness, but the price is just too far off (triple or more). I'll need to retreat to the practical solution, I hate doing that.

What office would have such an elaborate set of lights, a display room? Why would you be doing the work? Is that an odd side job?

This is for the main office at the company I work for. The building is fairly interesting architecturally, and we have our own road, along with lake, fountain, stream, etc. This will be a PR thing, and will likely only start with 256 channels and maybe 10,000 feet of lights. I plan on scaling it in the next few years to 1000+ channels. The coolest part about this installation versus the others out there is that since we own the road and have a large parking lot, you'll be inside the display.
