If the netgear software reorted "zero free space", why would you consider that a good thing? Apparently the format didn't work. Some "expert".

I think his relief, Bozo, was that the damn thing reported anything at all - i.e., for the first time, although he hadn't got it actually working, he had at least managed to make it believe that there were, indeed, some hard drives attached to it. Compared to the previous state of affairs, this was significant progress. Or that's how I read it anyway.
You know you are in deep trouble when the tech support number offers you a specific option for your device and the maker makes hundreds of things. Even worse, it is the first option.
