I moved someone's PST file to a new computer and set up their email account again. Usually when I do this Outlook starts retrieving new messages only. Sometimes it decides it has to download the entire server's worth of backlog. This is one of those times. Is there any way of making it see that the last message in the inbox has today's date on it?

From what I understand, this is related to whether they previously had "leave a copy of messages on the server" checked or not. If they left the messages on the server, you get it all. Outlook isn't smart enough one way or the other.

If you call up the ISP, they can often reset the message pointer to the top and thus prevent the DL'ing of any new messages.

I've done this successfully before under the circumstances where the machine was repeatedly DL'ing a Email virus and secondly, where the message counter gets messed up because the client has turned on the leave a copy messages on the server and then started deleting messages.
